Fraud investigation

So a while ago, I received around $300 from a random person. I was advised by people in my family and a representative from my bank to not send it back because it could be a scam and they could be trying to collect and then possibly get a refund to double their earnings. I also was afraid to expose any of my information by doing so. 2-3 weeks later, I get a call from them and a text threatening me to give them the money or they’ll go to the police.

I was still advised to ignore, block the number and wait for my bank to handle it if anything. I also didn’t want to risk them getting my information or my money because I don’t know who they are at all.

Today, I get a call and it goes to voicemail, it was apparently a detective from a police department asking for a call back. I’m not sure what to do in this situation now, is it possible for them to even go directly to a police department instead of just talking it with their bank?

Would appreciate some guidance, I’m going to try calling the bank again and seeing what they can do.
