A landmark case against AI misinformation? Possibly.
The Nancy Guthrie case may be the first big crime where AI has been used extensively to perpetuate false narratives. The amount of videos with crazy AI thumbnails portraying Savannah, Annie and Tomasso as the perpetrators is insane. They, particularly Tomasso, have been smeared so badly by YouTubers posting false information AND manipulated images. This is unlike the “fake news” era of the teens and early 2020’s in that it goes a level deeper because of image and video manipulation.
It’s one thing for investigative reporters to speculate about suspects, as Ashley Banfield did, since they are supposed to analyze all angles and share “tips” and “scoops” from what we hope are credible sources. It’s another thing for random YouTubers to create hundreds of videos with false information and fabricated images to match defamatory statements based on zero facts.
When all is said and done, I do believe the family, especially Annie and Tomasso, have strong grounds for a defamation lawsuit, possibly against individual creators or YouTube for not regulating content more closely.
