Dr Z is lying through his teeth

Go ahead and look at the thoughts about him on the psychiatry subreddit. He acted unethically and is not speaking truthfully about psychosis symptoms nor her own reported symptoms prior to the murders. He continues to claim that she told the medical professionals that treated her things she never ever said. For instance, he says she spoke about hallucinations in December. Unless he is speaking about his own conversations with her, in which she reflected on that time period, he’s straight up lying. Every single professional that evaluated her before the murders including the TWO different psychiatrists that separately evaluated her AFTER the murders (before Dr. Z) all say she denied auditory/visual hallucinations.

Additionally, he said she was having intrusive thoughts which he claims are always ego dystonic (not in alignment with goals/desires/values). Well she did in fact want to kill herself so I don’t know how those are ego dystonic. He then described these intrusive thoughts as a voice in her head. He says these were indicative of psychosis. Okay, sir. That’s called her own stream of consciousness. Not a hallucination. She now claims per the lawsuit that these were always auditory hallucinations. I’ve confirmed with DSM and other sources that an auditory hallucination is NOT the same thing as an intrusive thought. It’s always audibly heard and experienced with the ears. The location of the voice it may seem to be inside the skull or outside of oneself but they’re always audibly heard… no different than hearing someone speaking to you.

Why is he calling these intrusive thoughts? Intrusive thoughts, even disturbing ones like “what if I hit that pedestrian with my car right now?” are universal. People with OCD (which is NOT a psychotic disorder) have intrusive thoughts like “stab your husband” or “kill yourself”. They feel very upset about these thoughts and yet they do not want to obey them nor do they act on them. That’s why they’re called ego-dystonic. These are NOT audible hallucinations. They are not audibly heard.

He mentioned she thought these thoughts were being inserted by an external force. Okay, sir, well that would perhaps fall under a delusion, per the DSM, not a hallucination.

Finally, he said disassociation/depersonalization is a sign of psychosis. These symptoms are very common in panic and anxiety disorders. They’re not indicative of psychosis in and of themselves!

He is lying and exaggerating the truth. I feel bad for every person with OCD or panic disorder who experience intrusive thoughts and/or DPR who are now wondering if they’re psychotic lol.

Do you ever wonder how the divorce convo went?

I’m pretty pro-Patrick. I know he’s getting dragged by TikTok moms but I like the guy and I feel horrible for him. He was probably a very supportive husband. I mean, he bent over backwards for her. He might have been a little naive about mental illness and medications and had some prejudices about them but I think he meant well. She took his children from him. It’s horrible. I think him moving away and starting over and getting remarried was warranted.

But after all the years of no one ever telling Lindsay “no” and being at her beck and call at all times, how do you think she responded when he wanted the divorce? I’m assuming he filed, though records are sealed. It would make her look bad if she showed any animosity towards him right now. It would appear to give her a “motive” other than psychosis. But I personally imagine she’s fuming. How dare he start over and want some normalcy?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Social media is a cesspool

What is it with certain platforms like instagram just attracting the most ignorant people about this case? The comments on this post are just one example. It’s as if they didn’t even read anything pertinent to the trial at all. Is anyone else just growing tired and worried about how easily people fall for stuff? Even when nurse Jollotta is quoted saying she suspected bipolar and Pat denied, people are digging their heels in and blaming Jollotta and other providers???

TikTok girl

Lollll Reddington wants to bring on a girl who went viral on TikTok defending Lindsay. She’s a mental health counselor who used to work at McLean but was not there to see anything and did not work there when LC was there. “She doesn’t have a dog in this fight” “she has no ax to grind”. Give me a break. She’s a mini TikTok celebrity now. 🙄

Ringing in ear only to one loud tone

Hello,

34F

For background I had both middle ear muscles sectioned in both ears in 2020 for middle ear myoclonus. I don’t have any hearing loss or issues otherwise.

I noticed today when I was moving some furniture that one specific loud tone makes my right ear ring in sync with the loud noise. When the noise stops, my ear stops. Likewise, when I vocalize a ooooooh sound very loudly, that same ear rings in conjunction with the noise. It stops when I stop making that sound. Oddly, if I plug my ears and vocalize this same loud sound, I don’t hear the ringing. When I unplug my ears, say the “ooooh” loudly I do hear it. It does not happen when I say the same “ooooh” at a low volume. What the heck is this? Doesn’t bother me but I guess I never noticed it.

Altruistic Filicide

I think people are misunderstanding that psychosis is not the only mental illness that can lead to someone taking their children’s lives. In very deep depression there can be a degree of delusional thinking even though it wouldn’t necessarily qualify as a “delusion”. People clearly become depressed enough to think false things in suicidality like “my family is better off without me” “I am worthless and deserve to die”. These aren’t technically “delusions” that would merit a psychosis diagnosis but they’re deeply held, false beliefs driven by depression.

Altruistic filicide can go hand in hand with this when it comes to depression in mothers (or fathers). Altruistic filicide doesn’t have to be motivated by psychosis. It happens in depression too where someone is still fully responsible, able to appreciate the criminality of murder, and still able to control themselves. It can be as simple as “if I am gonna take my own life, it’s best that my kids go with me. I can’t leave them motherless.” They see it as a mercy to their children to take their life before they take their own. It’s still a choice and a horrible thing to do but the motivation, at least to the murderer, is altruistic.

The issue is that someone in this state, while obviously holding to false beliefs, likely doesn’t fit the criteria for “not guilty by reason of insanity” because they don’t meet either of these standards:

  1. Cognitive Incapacity: The person is substantially unable to appreciate the criminality or wrongfulness of their conduct.
  2. Volitional Incapacity: the person is substantially unable to conform their conduct to the requirements of the law (meaning they could not control their actions, even if they knew they were wrong).

What I’m trying to say is that it is a very real possibility that Lindsay was deeply depressed and suicidal (I think we have plenty of evidence here) but her motivation was “altruistic filicide”. One objection to this may be that the method of killing her kids was quite brutal and inhumane. It wasn’t quick and swift. It required a lot of strength and time and effort. I can agree with this. But perhaps someone who isn’t convinced she’s a monster would understand that, if we assumed the best that she loved her children deeply but was deeply depressed, this could easily be a case of suicidality with altruistic filicide and she’d still need to be held criminally accountable. She’d still be 100% responsible for the crime and deserving of a guilty conviction for first-degree murder.

I think we can hold two truths at once:

  1. she was mentally ill
  2. she should be held 100% responsible for an evil act she committed with her own free will.

Buspirone TD risk

34F, mild OCD, 5’7” 130lbs.

I have been taking 30 mg buspirone alongside 100mg sertraline for a while. I’m very happy with these dosages. But I’ve heard that buspirone has some D2 antagonist properties and that worries me because of theoretical TD risk with long term use. It’s on the warning label for the med. Seems like maybe there are only a few case studies of this happening and I’m finding that buspirone is even used in high doses as a possible treatment for TD but I wanted to ask here. Is this a legitimate concern? Or can I happily lay this worry to rest?

I’d love to hear the pharmacological explanation too! Thanks so much.

Intrusive thoughts are not intentions

The clips keep going around of Patrick describing Lindsay’s intrusive thoughts of hurting the kids. Scary, intrusive thoughts are EXTREMELY common when you become a parent. They’re only a concern if they’re ego-syntonic not ego-dystonic. I don’t believe Lindsay’s were ego-dystonic. Clearly she wanted to kill her kids and she did. I am also not totally sure that she was experiencing intrusive thoughts in the way she described. We don’t know for sure yet…

But I want to make it very clear that MANY parents, especially newly postpartum mothers have unwanted intrusive thoughts about their babies and children and they mean absolutely nothing other than that it’s exactly opposite of what they want.

I am saying this because I imagine all of the mothers reading the comments that are blaming Patrick for not sending her away as soon as she expressed that she was having intrusive thoughts. That’s not how it works. She told him they were egodystonic. She told them they were not what she wanted. Was she lying? Probably. But all he knew was that she was having “unwanted”, egodystonic intrusive thoughts about harming the kids. This in an of itself is not a red flag. He is not to blame for taking the doctors seriously when they said “as long as the thoughts are unwanted, this is not a concern”. In NORMAL circumstances, being distressed by such thoughts just means there’s likely an underlying anxiety, depression, or OCD going on. Not a hidden motive to murder.

Like I said, she clearly was lying to him about a lot of things and likely about this too. But to all the mothers reading… having unwanted intrusive thoughts doesn’t mean you are dangerous or harmful or should be sent away. It means the very opposite. YOU are NOT Lindsay Clancy. You are the opposite!

Scared

Hi there

34F mother of 3. I had a foam ablation done on a varicose vein and immediately had an aura migraine. They did a bubble study to look for a PFO but instead found “extra cardiac shunt”. I got a referral to pulmonology to check for a PAVM. I’m terrified now. I was an elite long distance runner for many years and am still very active and healthy. Never had any symptoms. I read that most AVMs are caused by HHT. Reading about HHT scares me. If I’m positive, I’ll have to have all three of my small children tested. Interestingly, I have no symptoms of HHT. No red spots and it’s been at least a couple decades since I’ve had a nose bleed. No one in the family with symptoms (grandparents or parents or siblings or my kids). Any reassurance?

There is hope for you

When I was in high school and college, I was a competitive XC/track athlete. Went to college on a running scholarship, set records, made All American, helped my team win national championships twice. I was a perfect runner… And I was terribly unhealthy. Due to the pressures of the sport and those around me, I restricted my eating and ran high mileage. I didn’t have my period for a long time. I couldn’t even tell you how long. I remember being chronically tired, having high anxiety, horrible acne, stomach problems, and insomnia. I’m shocked I never had a fracture. Shocked.

The best thing that ever happened to me was meeting my husband my junior year. His family basically adopted me and gave me love and support I’d never had in my own family. Likely due to this newfound loving relationship, I lost interest in running competitively, quit the team, and let go of my scholarship, much to the disappointment of my parents. I began to get my life back.

My doctor was concerned about my lack of periods and put me on the pill. I was on it for about 2 years. During this time I drastically reduced my running and began eating more. I put on about 15 lbs. I got married, got off the pill, and immediately got my cycle back. I was worried about not being able to have children but we now have 3 incredibly healthy children and my pregnancies were phenomenal.

I am now 34 and healthy! I have remained very active but strive to eat a balanced diet. I am at a healthy weight, and despite being pretty lean, I have never missed a period since getting off the pill at 23. One thing I have dealt with is PMDD and postpartum depression… and I do wonder how much of my turbulent hormonal landscape in the younger years made me predisposed to these hormonal sensitivities. Because of this, I have been on a low dose of Zoloft since my oldest child was born.

I recently worried a bit about my bone density so I got a Dexa scan and my T-scores are 0.6 across the board. Pretty good for my history and being in my mid 30s, I think!

Anyways, I remember being in your shoes and being very worried about my bone health and future. If I could go back in time, I’d never have sacrificed anything for my health… not in the name of running or the body I thought I should have. I also would have let go of the guilt. I love my body now and, even despite the hard things I put it through, I am grateful for it. It sure is resilient. ❤️
