What got someone removed from your hunting-partner list?

I went hunting with my brother once. We got to the jumping-off point with about four miles to hike before reaching the area we planned to hunt. When he showed up, he was clearly pretty drunk.

About 200 yards in, he asked if we were almost there. I told him we weren’t even close. He took off his boots, threw them into the woods, said he had something called drop foot and announced he was sleeping there.

I kept going. He is no longer on my list of hunting partners.

What are some of your worst hunting-partner stories?

How realistic is getting within bow range of a bull moose?

I got lucky and drew a bull moose tag in Unit 16 in Colorado. I plan to hunt it with a bow and am curious if anyone here has experience stalking bulls.

Most moose I’ve run into when I wasn’t hunting them have seemed fairly easy to walk up on. I assume that might change when they’re being hunted and dealing with more pressure. How realistic is getting within bow range? Anything you’ve learned about wind, cover, calling or how pressured bulls behave would be helpful.

Not looking for spots. Just trying to get a better idea of what to expect.

What hunting gear did you stop carrying?

Every packing list tells you what to add. I’m more interested in what experienced hunters eventually quit hauling around.

What looked essential at first but turned out to be dead weight? And what, if anything, replaced it?
