What is the significance of immersing a peda/prasad from a Tantrik puja in the Narmada? Could the person disposing of it be affected?
I’m a practicing Hindu and have been a devotee of Shri Hanuman Ji and Shree Shanidev Maharaj Ji since my teenage years. I’m asking this sincerely because something happened recently that has left me a little unsettled, and I would genuinely like to understand the traditional significance rather than just hear “it’s superstition.”
I was with a friend who has been going through a very difficult period in his life. While we were crossing the Narmada River, he asked me to throw a small pudiya (packet) into the river.
I asked him what it was, and only afterward he told me that he had recently had a Tantrik perform a puja for him. He said the packet contained a peda/prasad offering from that puja and that it was supposed to be thrown into the Narmada.
I did not eat the peda or perform any part of the puja. I simply took the packet and threw it into the river. To be honest, I don't even know what the packet had and unsure if my friend was trying to psych me out.
My questions are:
Is there a known Hindu/Tantric/folk ritual in which a peda or other food offering from a puja is subsequently immersed in a river?
Could this be related to something like utara, nazar, bali, etc.?
In traditional belief, is the person who physically disposes of such an object considered to have taken on anything from it, or is the disposal itself simply the completion of the ritual?
Is there any customary spiritual precaution that a Hindu would normally take after handling/discarding such an object?
Does the fact that it was the Narmada have any particular ritual significance?
I’m specifically interested in answers from people familiar with Hindu ritual traditions, Tantra, or relevant scriptures/parampara. Thank you.
