How do you grow a practice with mostly one-time clients

I'm curious how other attorneys handle the economics of practices where clients don't naturally come back very often.

For example, I'm a trademark attorney, and many businesses only need one trademark every few years or sometimes just once. That means client acquisition can be expensive relative to client lifetime value.

I imagine this isn't unique to trademark law. Many transactional practice areas probably face a similar challenge, where clients hire you for a specific project and then don't need your services again for quite some time.

For those of you in similar practices, how have you built a sustainable business?

Applicant on Amazon Brand Registry

Trademark attorney here. I'd love to hear the experiences of other trademark attorneys, Amazon agencies, and Amazon brand owners.

After I file a U.S. trademark application, many of my clients proceed with Amazon Brand Registry. Until recently, I rarely encountered any issues with the Brand Registry application. However, I've recently seen several situations where an Amazon agency submitted the Brand Registry application listing the agency (rather than the trademark owner) as the applicant.

From what I understand, an authorized third party can manage Brand Registry on behalf of the trademark owner if they have the appropriate authorization, such as an authorization letter or a license agreement. At the same time, Amazon appears to recommend registering Brand Registry in the name of the trademark owner, who can then grant access to agencies or other users through additional user permissions.

For those of you who regularly work with Amazon Brand Registry:

- Do you always register Brand Registry in the trademark owner's name?

- If an agency initially registers the account, have you encountered ownership or access issues later?

- Have you experienced any difficulties transferring control back to the trademark owner?

I'm interested in hearing real-world experiences and best practices. Thanks in advance for sharing your insights!
