Carpathian Basin before river regulations and the drought map in Hungary this september
In the late 1800s there was a major river regulation project in Hungary, where they regulated the Tisza river to it's current state, which was a good idea at the time, because since it was a mainly agricultural economy and this allowed a lot more land to be cultivated and it climate change was not an issue. Today however it's causing massive droughts which will get even worse in the future.
