Here's a morbid question, What if Luna had died sometime into her banishment? How would that change the events of the story?
I've been thinking about this for a while, and would love to discuss the idea. Let's say that Nightmare Moon would still return using Luna's remaining essence, reanimating her body for the entity's use. Once the Main Six purify the darkness, they would defeat Nightmare Moon, but Luna's spirit would ultimately be lost.
How would this affect the timeline and the characters' motivations going forward?
