This is purely hypothetical.

Instead of trying to adapt Avatar The Last Airbender scene for scene, what if HBO had taken the world and themes and turned them into a mature prestige drama in the style of Game of Thrones.

I mean a serious character driven fantasy series with slower pacing, political intrigue, brutal wars, realistic consequences, and the freedom to fully explore the darker parts of the Avatar world. Death, violence, and other mature themes would not be toned down.

I think the Avatar universe has an incredibly strong foundation for that kind of show. The Hundred Year War, the Fire Nation occupation, the politics of the Earth Kingdom, and the moral conflicts between different characters could all be explored in much greater depth.

My biggest issue with the Netflix adaptation is that it tries to retell the original story while rushing through too much material. It often feels like it assumes the audience has already watched the animated series instead of standing on its own. Because of that, a lot of emotional moments and character development do not have enough time to breathe.

Personally, I would rather see a completely different interpretation than another attempt at recreating the cartoon. The original series already exists and I do not think it can truly be improved by copying it.
