What are, in your opinion, some of the biggest failings of poptimism?

So a bit ago I was reading some takes and one of them was "arguably the greatest success of poptimism has been the reappraisal of Britney Spears," which is a take I think is true. It got me thinking about the critical movement as a whole and what some of its biggest wins and I was curious failures of the movement. I think there's been a great deal of reactionary and revisionist takes that have happened as a result of it which has caused some odd takes (like with regards to Spears, there are takes that paint her in almost a Brian Wilson light, an infantilized pop genius)

What are some things you consider failures of it?

Artists whose music you find really dumb but you also really enjoy?

George Thorogood and the Destroyers have recorded some of the stupidest songs but they're also really fun songs about drinking and being a badass with tight bluesy guitar riffs. Just good time party rock.

30 years ago today, maybe the greatest music-comedy crossover moment ever happened. What was your favourite moment from "Homerpalooza"?

What do you think should be the next odd ball 90s alt rock song Todd does a One Hot Wonderland on?

Yes Nada Surf eventually found their way to being a alt rock cult band (occasionally charting in the mid range of the Billboard 200) but the largely spoken word power pop anthem "Popular" is generally speaking the only song anyone is familiar with in their catalog.

What are some other 90s alt rock oddities Todd could cover?

What is the strangest music related documentary you've seen?

So recently watched this doc on Tubi and it's about two fans of 80s pop singer Tiffany: one of whom has a deeply unhealthy fixation on her, to the point where Tiffany is like a godlike figure to her, and other is very openly stalking her and will happily discuss the various restraining orders Tiffany has against him. I wouldn't call the film either sympathetic or judgemental, it's just two people with the same obsession, that borders of dangerous at times. There's very clear signs of untreated or at least minimally treated mental health concerns from both people.

We also see Tiffany directly interacting with both of them, she allows the stalker to attend promotional events but is clearly uncomfortable with him, and how the meetings impact all parties. The filmmakers also arrange the two fans meeting which turns into an intense contest of "fandom".

It's a really uncomfortable but compelling documentary.

With that what are some other very strange music docs?

The strange case of Cage the Elephant

So Cage the Elephant have had an unreal level of success with 13 #1 alternative singles, several platinum and gold albums, eight platinum or multi-platinum singles (including one which has gone 8xPlatinum), and won a pair of Grammys.

All while being none of the following A) an elite act with critics (eg. Vampire Weekend, Jack White) B) a pop crossover success (eg. Twenty One Pilots, Imagine Dragons) C) become kind of a noted legacy band (eg. Queens of the Stone Age, Paramore) D) a band that has been on the cover of Rolling Stone, played Saturday Night Live, or headlined a major festival (they've been booked at them and headlined more mid tier festivals).

They're a rock band who have arguably reached the tippy top of rock but don't fit into any box of rock band success. They're like a band that alternative rock radio has managed to amphitheatre superstars without even SNL really taking notice.

Film left out since December still good?

I got some super 8 BW film for Christmas. It was forgotten by mistake and I just got it back. I don't think it was put in a fridge or freezer.

Should the film still be ok?

When it comes to radio, what is your preferred format?

Just was curious when it comes to radio what formats do people here listen to? Top 40? Classic rock? AAA? Hot RnB? Country?

I listen to a lot of AAA and active rock but also listen to certain shows on the local indigenous station.

'Hallucigenia ' famously derailed the career of Lowest of the Low. Their debut album 'Shakespeare My Butt' (1991) was for a time the best selling indie album in Canadian history and has since frequently been cited as one of the best Canadian albums ever.

Enter 'Hallucigenia' which sees the band sign with A&M (selling out!) and working with producer Don Smith, whom the band clashed with heavily over politics (the band openly called him a racist in the press) and would frequently ditch recording sessions. The band also shifted into a harder rock sound which caused fan and critics to be disappointed in the album and in the end Lowest of the Low broke up for several years.

So Justin Timberlake has a popular and well liked franchise (Trolls), roles in some box-office hits (Shrek the Third, Bad Teacher, Yogi Bear), supporting turns in some modern classics (The Social Network, Inside Llewyn Davis) and a cult classic (Southland Tales), and a lot of films that do ok financially (In Time, Runner Runner, Reptile) or critically (Palmer) or both (Friends with Benefits). He's definitely got some flops and stinkers but it's safe to say he's had a pretty decent film career. You can also add that he's managed to win a couple of Emmys as an actor for his work on SNL.

Who are some other pop mega stars who have ended up with pretty decent film careers?
