Buying a 6.7 for the reliability and not towing capacity??
I'm needing a new truck, and the market is kind of shit with what is available. Truck's whole purpose would be long trips with boats, and likely some without. Boats aren't big boats, easily pulled with a 1/2 ton truck. Talking like 5k lbs max.
Chevy and Dodge aren't even in the discussion. New tundra zero chance as well. So I'm left with 3 options: 2nd gen Tundra, F150, or F250. Tundra has the reliability, but to get a nice one under 150k miles, it's 40k. F150 not as reliable but easier to find, prices are also pretty high. Last is the 250 with 6.7, which can be had used for just a little more than the Tundra or F150.
In my searching, seems 45ish can get you a 6.7 with around 100k miles. What's the longevity on these things with normal maintenance and no big repairs? Everyone in the Facebook groups praises the reliability, but they are changing trucks every 5 years. Saying stuff like "30k miles without issue", like that's some sort of achievement. I'm interested in 200-300k trouble free miles.
Will a 6.7 with normal maintenance go 300k miles sparing any major repairs and bad luck? Or once you get in the 100k mile range big things start breaking? There will be no lifting, giant tires, 5th wheel pulling, etc. Just towing a small boat 3-10 hours.
Why do people keep bringing up maintenance costs being so high? Oil and fuel filters seems to be about 200 or so in parts. Current gasser truck is almost $100. Add in fuel additives. What else am I missing? I do my own maintenance at home.
I know fuel cost is higher, but MPG is better, and especially towing. Even a 4k lb boat will drop a gasser MPG to 10-12. Seems like the 6.7 will barely notice. I'll probably do 5k miles a year max since it will only be used for towing boat and occasional hardware store. I have a daily driver for work, and current truck will turn into hunting rig.
Am I dreaming thinking a 6.7 will last me 300k miles without issue, and even considering it without the towing capacity need?
