My soul dog, Akira.

Babygirl just turned 11 last month. Aside from some slight arthritis, she’s in great health, and I truly couldn’t be more grateful. I’ve had her since she was just a baby, around 10 or 11 months old, and I don’t think I could ever put into words just how incredible she’s been.
The first photo was taken at Green Lakes State Park near Syracuse, NY, just a few weeks ago. Looking at it, you’d never know she’s 11.

Over the last few months, I’ve found myself thinking a lot more about her getting older. We brought home a seven-month-old puppy a few months ago, and he’s just turning 10 months old now. I honestly unraveled a little when we brought him home because, in so many ways, he reminded me of Akira at that age. It was like looking at a version of her from ten years ago, and it really drove home just how much time has passed. How quickly it all goes, and how time really does stop for no one.

It’s made me more aware of her than I think I’ve ever been. I notice the little things now. The days when she’s still full of that puppy energy, running around and acting like she’s five years younger. The days when she’s a little stiffer, moves a little slower, or would rather curl up and sleep. And instead of just seeing those things as reminders that she’s getting older, I find myself appreciating them for what they are: moments I get to have with her.

Of course it makes me sad sometimes. I don’t think there’s any way around that when you’ve loved a dog for more than a decade. But if there’s one thing getting older has taught me, it’s to be more present with her. To appreciate the walks, the naps, the goofy moments, the quiet moments, and even the completely ordinary days.
I don’t know how many years I have left with my girl, and I don’t want to spend them worrying about that. I just want to be grateful for the time we do have.

11 years with her, and I still don’t think I could ever put into words how incredible she is. ❤️

This Reddit thread has really helped me so much in so many ways, and I’m very grateful for all of you here.
