Is it normal for elderly dogs to get hungrier?

I have a 15 year old terrier cross. He has never been particularly food oriented but maintained a good weight. Over the last few months I've noticed his spine is more obvious, which I assumed was age related muscle wastage. In the last few days he's seemed hungrier. He usually has half a small tray of scrumbles wet food with some chopped chicken on top twice a day, a few treats, and has access to biscuits but doesn't usually eat many but I don't know if that's because he doesn't have many teeth. Tonight I've given him the whole tray because he was eating biscuits, and he ate the lot. Is this a thing in old age? I would've thought the opposite would happen?

The love people have for their senior dogs is honestly beautiful ❤️

There’s something really special about the bond with our dogs. As dog owners, we know that this love just grows with each day.

You stay patient when they slow down. You celebrate the good days.
You notice the tiny changes nobody else would catch. You learn their medications, routines, favorite sleeping spots, and all the little signs that say “something isn’t right.”

That’s a big part of why I built the free Fido’s Bark app. I kept seeing pet owners trying so hard to stay on top of medications, weight changes, symptoms, vet visits, reminders, and daily notes — especially with older dogs where little changes can mean a lot.

The app allows pet owners to keep everything together in one place.

No ads. Free to use. Just something made with a lot of care for people doing their best for the dogs they love ❤️ Here is the link to the free app if you are interested:

Dragging back feet

Hi everyone,

I have an almost 13yo lab/golden mix. He is 75 pounds. In the past year he has started to have difficulty getting up and when he walks, he sometimes drags his back paws. I originally thought the marks on his foot were from licking due to allergies but I can now see him struggling. I have him on some pain meds and dementia meds. Is there anything on the market that helps with hind end stability? I see all kinds of stuff advertised but don’t trust anything that says “selling out fast, buy now!”

I lost my best friend Friday.

He's was15 with CHF , he collapsed so urgent vet visit. He had rapid atrial fibrillation and he wasn't getting oxygen thru to his lungs , brain. Quite a few other options to try $$$$ but I said I don't want him suffering anymore. Hardest decision ever but he's gone. I'm devastated to say the least. Hugs to all of you with elderly dogs. No matter how prepared you think you are.I found I wasn't prepared.

Pearl

This gal is only 10 but seems to have aged quickly in the last year. Hearing loss, less energy, unable to jump on couch/bed, lack of interest in visitors. Check up and blood panel revealed nothing concerning. It's like she went from 9 to 15 in a few months.

Lost by best friend of almost 14 years.

My boy Luke was a three-legged lab who I've had since he was born. He lost his leg before he even made it to a year old. He was an escape artist and got hit by a car after he got out of the yard. After losing his front leg, I thought he would be slowed down. Boy, was I wrong he was just as fast and could still jump our fence. But a few years ago, age started to catch up to him, and he couldn't walk as far anymore and making old man noises but still happy as could be. Then, this past year, he couldn't walk without the help of a sling, and even then it was just to get outside, so we took him on wagon rides to see and smell all the things. Finally, the last few months, he couldn't really stand up and was having accidents all over himself. Even though mentally Luke was there. Physically, he was not and hurting. So we had to make the hardest decision to let him go. The vet came to our house so he would be comfortable( he hated the vets office). Hopefully, his last moments were happy eating peanutbutter with his family around him.

Love you buddy you're my boy

Recently had to say goodbye to this sweet girl, she was nearly 17

Was still walking in the woods and getting in the water just a few weeks before her legs finally quit on her. She was an intelligent and confident dog. In my life from age 17-34, I miss her dearly.

What a difference a week makes…

Just a week ago we celebrated Daisy’s 13th birthday. We thought she was doing better and on the mend. Yesterday we had to say goodbye & now my arms feel empty, the house is too quiet and our pack is mourning her loss. I know her suffering is over and she running wild & free in Heaven but I miss her so deeply it physically hurts. It will get easier, our hearts will heal and we will see her again one day. I’m so grateful for her & the time we shared. I’m a better human because of her

Seeking advice: what has worked for you to keep your senior dog warm?

My guy has always been a chilly boy… but in his old age (15 and going strong!) especially, he can’t get or stay warm even on a summer day. We’re going camping for 2 nights next week, and I am so worried for him. Last trip, I kept him warm with a bunch of blankets, a dog-sweater, jacket on top of it, and disposable toe-warmers stuck on the inside of his sweater, 2 at a time. He survived, but the cold took a visible toll on him - his back legs were more stiff than usual for a few days.

Any suggestions appreciated.

12 year old pitbull

We have a 12 year old male pitbull. His weight is perfect. Lately, he’s been suffering from arthritis in his back legs. The vet recommended adequan. Has anyone used this before?

Joint supplements with Librela shot?

I took my 16 year old boy to the vet earlier this week to address his arthritis. The vet and I decided to trial the Librela shot with as needed carprofen. I know it is too soon to tell if the shot is going to help as the vet said it usually takes 2 shots to see a difference.

For those who have your dog on the Librela shot, I am curious if you are also giving them any sort of joint health supplements? I have been giving him Dasuquin for the past 5 years and the vet is obviously fine with it, but did say that there really isn’t substantial evidence to prove glucosamine helps with joint health. However, for being 16, he is moving around pretty darn well so I really think it has helped! He has never been overweight which I know helps too. I am considering adding in fish oil as I’ve read that can help with inflammation, but forgot to ask the vet about that. Just not sure if it’s necessary with the shot?

He has shown a somewhat significant decline in mobility over the past 6 months or so, but otherwise is a very happy, healthy pup! His blood work is perfect. I just want to give him the best care as he deserves it and I know it’s coming to the point where our time together is limited.❤️

I would love to hear your experience with the Librela shot as well as I’m hoping it really helps him!

Thanks!
