Brush: Rad Dinosaur Creations Clark High Mountain Rex Silvertip Badger
Razor: MÜHLE R41
Blade: Gillette Nacet (1)
Lather: House of Mammoth - Shire - Croap
Post Shave: House of Mammoth - Shire - Balm
Bowl: Captain’s Choice - Old Ironsides

My daughter kept me awake most of the night, so I was going to keep things simple this morning.
Somehow, I ended up wanting a proper shave and reached for the R41.

It turned out to be an excellent choice. Three passes gave me a very clean shave, and even the fine stubble I usually miss was gone.

I don’t remember liking the R41 quite this much before.
Perhaps all the razors I’ve used since then have taught me a little about how to use it.
It’s interesting how the way you see a razor can change with time.

SOTD

Back to the straight razor for the first time in a while.

A few shaves ago, I managed to get some rust on the edge because of the water, so I had to rebuild the edge from scratch.

I started with 800 grit, then 1000, 6000, 12000, and finally the Nakayama natural stone.
But 6000 → Nakayama wasn’t giving me the edge I wanted. I tried a few other stones as well and went through quite a bit of trial and error. 😅
In the end, I think the Naniwa 12k was what really made the difference. I managed to get an edge that feels just as good as before. I’m still not sure how much difference the Nakayama actually made. 😂

Next time, I’ll try sharpening it again without the Nakayama and see what happens.

Today I went for three passes. My technique is definitely getting better too. Almost no bleeding, and I ended up with a very satisfying shave all over.
The Speick scent left everything smelling fresh and clean.

Happy Shaving! 🪒

SOTD / Barely made it this morning

Overslept this morning and was already running late. It was also raining, and I’m still getting over a cold, so I wasn’t exactly at my best.
Thankfully, face lathering was quick and easy, so I managed to get a shave in without making myself even later. Just one pass, though, and the result was pretty average.
Then I arrived at the nursery and realised I’d forgotten my daughter’s entire bag of stuff. 😂
So, not exactly my most organised morning.

Razor: Blackland Blackbird
Blade: Astra Superior Platinum (1st use)
Brush: Simpson Chubby 2 Super
Soap: Noble Otter Logbook
After Shave: Zingari Man After Shave Serum Unscented

SOTD / Falling down the rabbit hole

Razor: DOVO Bergischer Löwe 5/8
Scuttle: Steve Woodhead Pottery
Brush: RadDinosaurCreations Clark
Soap: House of Mammoth Shire
After Shave: House of Mammoth Shire
I started with a Mühle R89.
Somehow, I ended up here.
After wandering around the internet for far too long, I’ve gradually put together this little collection. Every piece you see here has been a genuinely wonderful tool to use, and I’d like to give each of them a proper review in due course.
The rabbit hole is surprisingly deep, though.
I mean, one day you’re buying a razor, and before you know it, you’re ordering sharpening stones online. 😂
I’m still very much learning with the straight razor, so the training continues. On weekends, when I have a little more time in the morning, I’ll usually spend some of it practising with the straight.
Still plenty to learn, but that’s rather part of the fun.

First SOTD. Still learning the R41.

SOTD
Razor: Mühle R41
Blade: Feather Hi-Stainless (1)
Brush: Mühle STF Synthetic
Soap: Geo. F. Trumper Sandalwood Hard Soap
Post: Taylor of Old Bond Street Mr. Taylor Aftershave Balm

I’ve been wet shaving for about three years, mostly with a Mühle R89.
Recently I finally decided to try the R41 after reading so many stories about it. To my surprise, I didn’t find it scary at all. In fact, I really enjoyed the efficiency and how easily it shaved my jawline.
Today was my first time pairing it with a Feather blade.
Well… let’s just say my face reminded me who’s in charge. 😅
I ended up with quite a few small nicks. Lesson learned! I think my technique still needs to catch up with such an efficient combination.
I’m really enjoying discovering the world of traditional wet shaving, and reading everyone’s SOTDs here has been a big inspiration.
I’m starting to understand why people enjoy this hobby so much.
Have a great shave!
