Finally Got A Proper Pipe On My Roadster

Installed an SP Concepts pipe on my bike after having a pretty disastrous experience with a cheapo Ebay pipe. It's a bit fiddly, you need to mount the muffler first then install the headers into the muffler and turn them up into the heads to get everything to fit, but all in all they look great. The 2-1 is LOUD though, and the video actually does a good job of capturing the sound. I'm thinking about putting a Thunder Torque Insert in the end to help deepen the tone a bit and knock off a few dBs since there's no removeable baffle. They're absolutely gorgeous too. The welds are flawless and it's already starting to go gold. All in, I'm pleased, even if they're a little louder than I was looking for.

PSA: Do Not Buy From Gnarly Exhausts

I have seen a handful of people talking about these fancy looking ebay exhausts from a company called Gnarly Exhaust. The pipes look flashy and they're pretty cheap which you'd expect from an Indonesian brand. They're also hand made which is neat (in theory) and they look awesome in the photos. Problem is the exhausts themselves are TRASH. Now it's possible I got one made on a Friday because they're made to order, but if I can save you some cash or at least a headache I'll call that a win.

PS: my bike is a 2017 Roadster with 14.5" of ride height in the back (bung kings lift kit and Ohlins shocks) with an XR1200 front end.

  1. O2 bung fitment: the pipes are equipped with the big threaded port for bigger O2 sensors, and I had mine come with some bungs to reduce it down to the stock O2 sensor size. Problem is the OD of the bung and the ID of the threads in the pipe don't match. The bung is too small. Okay, no big deal, I can get bungs pretty cheap, but it's annoying.

  2. Muffler mount fitment: the included bracket is just a steel plate with two holes drilled in it. They give you two and the long one was just about right. Problem is the included bolt for the muffler mount bottoms out before it gets tight. Okay fine, run off to Home Depot and get a shorter one. Annoying but no big deal.

  3. Frame mount fitment: the top end of the muffler mount bracket is supposed to mount to the frame at the shock. Problem is the bracket hits the shock and without a big ass spacer you'll never have the clearance you need to actually bolt it down. You could fab your own spacer and mounting bracket but you paid for the mounting hardware, so why should you?

  4. Muffler/header fitment: one of my mufflers was out of round where the header runs into the muffler. Okay fine, I can hammer it back into round with a big ass wrench. The bigger issue is the headers are different lengths. The front header is about an inch longer, meaning your rear header won't even touch the muffler. There's about a 2mm gap. That's inexcusable, and before I hear armchair mechanics tell me to bust out the angle grinder let me remind you I paid someone to build the exhaust. The least they could do is make sure the headers are the right length. That's before we talk about the giant gaps between the muffler and the header but muffler weld would solve that issue I suppose.

  5. Footpeg clearance: this will very based on what you get but the tracker style one I bought won't work with mids. Fine, okay, I was going to put rear sets on anyway but I've already made four other excuses for this stupid pipe.

  6. Cost: it seems cheap at first glance but $600 + $130 shipping + taxes + extra parts because the stuff included is ass + time + sanity = just buy a Cobra or Bassani or V&H.

I get it, they look cool, and some of y'all might be world class fabricators who can make a time machine out of a pile of scrap and bubble gum but I'm not really talking to y'all. I can write off this piece of junk on my taxes, but most of y'all probably can't. It ain't worth the risk.

TL;DR: don't buy a Gnarly Exhaust from ebay. It's cheap and looks neat, but the fitment is trash and you don't actually save any money over a real pipe.

2022 Super Duke R Evo Fuel Pump Failure

I have a '22 SD Evo R that sat for about a month. I ran it at the track and everything was fine, but the old lithium battery was having a hard time holding a charge so when I came out to change the oil ahead of my next track day I put in a new battery, fired it up and it ran for long enough to get the oil hot for a change 1-2 minutes. No muss no fuss. Dropped the oil, swapped the filters, put everything back together and now it's stumbling and showing me this fuel pump failure notification. The pump primes no problem, and it'll fire right back up, but the pump doesn't want to keep running. Time for a new one or do y'all have any ideas?

Edit: based on nothing other than gut feeling, I think maybe the battery I got isn't right for the bike. I know the Duke is super sensitive to power fluctuations and voltage drops. I'm guessing that it's just not getting enough juice... other than that I'm guessing.
