Leather / Suede - beginner machine choices

Hi so I do not know how to use a machine at all, I’ve always hand sewn.

I have just a regular flat desk table, and want to be able to transport it between rooms. I’m new and don’t want to spend a fortune when I am not sure if I will even take to it, so it looks like $250-$350 CAD is about right. (Unless I am missing some miracle even less expensive basic machine).

The beginner models most recommended online seem to be all Brother machines:
- XM207 ($211 CAD)
- XR9550 ($314 CAD)
- CS7000X ($359 CAD)

However, I suspect I may one day want to see leather (coats, skirts for cosplay). So I am uncertain if I should go for a heavier duty machine that (supposedly) also does leather.

The “heavy duty” ones that come up in a similar price range seem to be:
- Brother ST531HD ($291 CAD) (old version?)
- Brother ST371HD ($333 CAD) (new version?)
- Singer Heavy Duty 4411 ($260 CAD)

Questions:

  1. Just how much harder would a heavy duty machine be to learn? (Should I really just start with a beginner machine).

  2. Will it take me a very long time to get good enough to actually work with leather? (I know I need to practice first, but are we talking an extra month of study/practice or are we talking serious pro know-how.)

  3. Are any of the heavy duty machines worth it? Do they compare to the regular “beginner” machines overall in quality? (I see some saying that these lower priced “heavy duty” machines don’t last super long if you use them on leather, even though they all claim to be leather compatible. Also that you need a foot pedal.)

  4. Is Singer the devil? (The new models seem despised by many in this sub).

  5. Just how long do you feel it took you, personally, to learn enough to feel happy with what you were making? (Not destroying quality fabric with poor skills).

Thanks so very much all!

Apology & gratitude post - re polymaker dual matte camo PLA

I want to update about an issue that I wrongly attributed to a polymaker spool — the Panchroma dual matte camouflage PLA.

TLDR: It was the Bambu P1S that was the major issue; using camo on the wrong setting was the straw that broke the printer’s back, but wasn’t the problem itself.

I made a post in January about a camo spool that seemed to be messing up in the Bambu P1S. The printer was working with other polymaker spools, then died with camo (still working on the external spool for a while with regular polymaker spools).

Polymaker replaced that first camo spool in case it had been the issue, and gave a credit for the store. They were fast to reply to my inquiry and offered possible reasons/solutions for what could be up with the spool.

For some reason the other polymaker spools did continue to work (at first) on the external spool. I think part of this was because we had the wrong profile setting for camo: if you’re having P1S & camo issues, try using the Overture Matte PLA setting from Bambu. But ultimately it was definitely something wrong with the printer overall.

In the end, after a 100+ hours troubleshooting with Bambu (they would’t take back the printer for repairs despite it being only 5 months old and under full warranty, nor pay for a repair tech to come out in person), it was a random, incredibly kind and helpful stranger from a fb group that came over and found the problem (a tiny broken piece that didn’t look broken) and fixed it with his own supplies.

Overall I still think Polymaker makes the best quality out there, and I appreciate their fast reply & troubleshooting & accountability (when it wasn’t even their fault).

DYI Pip Boy screen - suggestions?

I made a 3d printed pip boy, with a laminated paper screen, and it’s cute and I love it and all. But now I would like to make one with an actual screen built in. However, there are no easy apps for it anymore (that I can find in Canada at least).

What are some ways 3d print makers have solved this issue?

I’m not technologically proficient, but I understand a raspberry pi can get a fun screen… has anyone experience with that, who could comment suggestions or otherwise connect with me? Or any other methods.

I appreciate any help! Thank you.

PS. First pip boy attempt attached for fun.
