WF is withholding my money
My father passed away last year, but before he passed, he was in the process of settling a worker's comp claim with Washington Labor & Industries, so when he passed, I was able to take over the claim.
Washington L&I issued an initial down payment to me on Monday, and i deposited the check yesterday. I expected there would be a hold, and was told $275 would be available today, another amount would be available Monday, and the remaining amount would clear on the 20th. Cool, fine, no problem.
I checked my account at 2am and the $275 was there.
Then i checked it again at 10am and it was gone! But there was nothing in my transaction history for today, so i called Wells Fargo to ask what was going on.
I was told the hold was extended to the 22nd and none of the funds would be available until the 26th due to "unusual activity" on the account the check was drawn from. This makes no sense, because it's a government check!
So i called Washington L&I, and they connected me with the Warrants department, who told me that the Washington State Treasury has transferred the funds to Wells Fargo, so they have the money!
So i called WF back and explained this, and they told me that yes, they have the money, but they aren't comfortable releasing the funds to me yet, and there is nothing that can be done but wait for the hold to expire!
I am extremely upset, because I have bills I need to pay before then, but Wells Fargo just decided to withhold my money! I've deposited larger check than this before without issue. I've never had any kind of fraud on my account. This makes no sense! I am so done with Wells Fargo at this point. I used to work for them, and have never had an issue until now. But the fact that they can give me a partial amount of the funds but then decide to take it back and withhold the entire amount for no reason is just absolutely insane.
With check holds, they used to be able to release the hold if you had the check issuer verify the funds with their check holds department. But apparently they can't do that anymore.
Wells fargo has really gone downhill, and i am going to be closing my account and going elsewhere after this. It's one thing to put a hold because there was an issue verifying the check, but to actually have the money but decide to hold onto it just because they can? Absolutely ridiculous. I'm just so angry right now.
