Koofr, a private alternative to Dropbox

I used Dropbox for years because it was "the default." But over time, it became harder to ignore the downsides: device limits on free accounts, constant upsell popups, and growing privacy concerns regarding how they handle personal data.

I started testing alternative cloud storage options looking for something lightweight, secure, and respectful of user data.

pCloud gets recommended a lot, but a few things turned me off. First, they have monthly download traffic cap and throttle large file transfers. Second, their zero-knowledge client-side encryption requires extra paying.

Icedrive lacks native WebDAV support and uses proprietary encryption algorithms rather than open standards. It felt too restrictive and limited for my daily workflow.

That’s when I came across Koofr https://koofr.eu/

It’s an EU-based cloud storage provider that focuses heavily on privacy, transparency, and user control. While it isn't completely open-source, it avoids the corporate bloatware and lock-in of mainstream options.

Here are a few stand-out features that make it a solid Dropbox alternative:

  • Zero tracking & GDPR compliant
  • Connect external accounts like Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox
  • WebDAV support
  • No device and files size limits
  • Built-in duplicate finder & cleanup tools
  • Additional client-side encryption (Koofr Vault)

It runs natively on Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, plus has a lightweight browser extension for saving web content directly to cloud.

If you rely heavily on real-time collaborative document editing like Google Docs or Microsoft 365 natively inside the browser, Koofr has MS Office integration. However, it feels significantly lighter and less invasive than Dropbox.

If you're looking to deGoogle or move away from Big Tech storage without hosting your own home server, Koofr is definitely worth taking for a spin.

Just Launched: The New Koofr iOS App

Introducing the completely rebuilt Koofr iOS app! We’ve included the features you’ve been asking for, plus a refreshed interface and improved usability to ensure a better experience.

Files App Integration

The Koofr iOS app now integrates with the native Files app, allowing you to manage your Koofr content directly from your iOS device.

Automatic background backup

Once enabled, your photos and videos can be uploaded to Koofr seamlessly in the background, without you noticing. Choose between creation date or upload date for new media. Koofr has your back(up)!

Note: Automatic background backup works on iOS 26.4 and later. Users on older iOS versions may experience some technical difficulties beyond our control.

Note: While the app supports background uploads, iOS ultimately decides exactly when the upload is triggered. iOS manages this timing based on your network connection, battery level, and overall system usage. As a result, the interval between uploads can range from a few minutes to a few hours.

For existing users updating the Koofr app: Because this is a completely new app, enabling "Backup existing photos" will trigger a scan of all photos on your device. Depending on the size of your photo library, this initial check may take some time.

The upload may also include photos that you previously deleted manually from Koofr or files that skipped uploading in the past. The new app will back up all photos on your device in the highest possible resolution available. Note: if a photo is stored on iCloud, only the remaining thumbnail on your device will be backed up to Koofr.

Once this one-time process is complete, background uploading will resume normally for newly added photos.

Easier and faster file saving
Upload multiple files at once! Files can be saved directly from other apps to Koofr, without ever opening the Koofr app.

HEIC or JPEG?
Decide if you want to upload your photos in their original HEIC format or have iOS convert them to JPEG before you upload them to Koofr.
Note: This setup applies only to manual photo uploads.

Deleted files
Permanently delete or undelete all files in your Trash at once.

Labels
Files and folder labels are now visible in Koofr app.

Search
Advanced search capabilities, including searching by file type and label.

Better link management
with upload and download links functionalities.

Jobs and Activity view

How to Download the new iOS app

Simply go to the App Store and update to the latest version (4.0.0) of the Koofr iOS app.

Help us find the bugs

We’ve worked hard to find all bugs, but no one finds them quite like real-life users ;)
If you find any, use the "Report a bug" button within the app and let us know. We’ll make sure those bugs are dealt with swiftly.
