IPM bug of the day

This is something you might see in your garden and a good reason to think twice about spraying any pesticides.

This is a hover (syrphid) fly pupa. It resembles a water drop and is formed after the larvae eats massive numbers of garden pests.

The friendly wiggle butt hover fly is easily seen inside and will eclose to pollinate your garden and make more larvae.

If you spray, you kill the good bugs as well as the bad. Watching the natural predators care for your food is delightful and makes gardening more interesting and fun.

Wasp people how long is a tiny nest active?

I have a paper wasp nest that the queen made under a stone w about 1 inch of clearance to the ground. It is a flat stone propped on my seam of the bulkhead doors. It can grow out, but there's no room.

If this happens, do they keep it small and stop using it or do they just make it a flat nest?

Easy fix?

"Temporary" steps built right up against the new cedar siding, come winter, will this cause a problem w snow?

How to improve this situation given the steps might be there a bit. The stringer below goes right up to the edge. Dont think there's flashing.
