Investigation Challenge – Discover details vs. advancing a Status?

Hi, I'm planning a short campaign currently which will start out with a little bit of a mystery to solve. I'm thinking of having a Challenge with an "Investigation" limit, which after I will describe what the Heroes can conclude from all the evidence, and leads to follow next.

The thing I'm thinking about is how with a detailed roll, there is already an option to "discover a valuable detail," but if the main status to progress is Investigating, those almost feel like they'd become the same thing in this context. Unless the status is just narrated generally, like "your character finds some clues," where Details tell about specific pieces of evidence, maybe? Though I think it would feel weird to give evidence from a Detail but then not have that mechanically bring them closer to a conclusion.

But how would you handle this sort of situation? And is this even a good premise for a Challenge, or should they just do simple rolls to find bits of evidence individually or something?

Need help designing a cult lair

I've been running a long homebrew game which is finally getting close to the end, and my players will soon be infiltrating the big bad cult lair, which is inside of an "abandoned" mine. This is a slightly unusual cult in that they don't exactly worship their god, since their goal is to keep it trapped and sleeping under the earth, but have also been exploiting it for power to do evil stuff.

(If you happen to be one of my players don't look lmao. Check my username to be sure XP)

Anyway, I'm trying to make a general map of the lair, not to track specific movement or w/e but just as a general investigation guide, but I'm having trouble coming up with what kinds of rooms would be in this lair. What are some things cults would have, stereotypically?

So far, I have:

  • an entrance with some big statues of the cult leaders and such
  • a library full of cult propaganda and occult texts
  • 'dorm' rooms for cultists who live there full time
  • big communal cult chapel (if there is a final show down fight, it'll be in here)
  • cult leaders' personal chambers and study

But drawing out map concepts with those still kinda feels a bit too small. I feel like I'd like at least a couple more rooms, especially so players will have more places to look and not just go linearly from start to end.

Prep actions and "double dipping"

I recently received my books and had a great time reading through them, but one of my biggest questions is about prep actions for indirect tags. I know with reactions, you can't "double dip" by using the same tags as you used to initiate the action, but there aren't a lot of details about prep actions and if that's true there.

Is there any limit to what tags you can use for a prep action vs the direct action? Like to make an example, if prepping a climbing action by first looking for footholds, could you use tags "practiced climber", "wilderness survivor", and "keen eyes" (indirect) to create a temporary "footholds" tag, then use that plus practiced climber and wilderness survivor again to actually do the climb?

Criminally underrated CofC YouTuber: Balsa's Table Tales

If you're anything like me and enjoy watching YouTube advice for TTRPGs but have a hard time finding good ones who cover anything but D&D, I stumbled across this gem of a channel a few months ago and was shocked at how much polish and effort go into his videos despite having less than a thousand subscribers and getting the same amount or less views on most videos. They even have these little paper-like animations/graphics which are really unique.

The channel is called Balsa's Table Tales, and if you want a few specific recommendations to check out, here's a video about Writing Your Own Investigation (11 min), about Failing Forward (9 min), and a short Guide to Magic (5 min).

I am not Balsa, whoever he is, nor know him or anything, I just genuinely really like his stuff and wanted to get it out there since I think it's really cool and I like supporting small creators!

Printer friendly character sheet/theme cards?

Hello, I just preordered the book and am very excited to try it out with friends! I typically play in person, and was wondering if there's an easy way to print a physical character sheet?

In the character making section, the PDF book just says "record [the Hero's] details on printed cards from the Theme Card Pack or on the character sheet at the back of this book," but that one is in full color and thus not very nice to print, and I don't necessarily want to buy the whole theme card pack, but unless I'm missing something it feels almost required?

Very worst case I could make my own simple version to print for my players but that feels like a weird oversight on the designer's part.
