English as a Second Language

Years ago I (a native English speaker from the U.S.) volunteered to assist in an adult English as a Second Language class. I was yes told that English was so difficult many times. On one occasion I was asked why do we say (1) I’m going home, but then say (2) I’m going to school, and next time say (3) I’m going to the store? I was stumped. Does anyone have an answer that explains how these three different examples follow logical rules of grammar? Or is this just the way it is?

Eighties Language

The year is 1987. Someone calls you a dork. Is this good, bad, or indifferent?
What does dork even mean?
