Cessna Skymaster

Always thought the O-2 was really cool after seeing one at a museum and did know they were a military Skymaster.

Now looking at the Skymasters they seem reasonably priced. even with low/mid time engines compared to a 172. So what’s the deal? Unreasonable operating costs of a multi with performance of a single? Money pits with maintenance? How is parts availability?

Post rotation buffeting 737 and PA28

Student pilot here. What causes that post rotation buffeting in the wings, if that’s the proper term?

I hear/feel it all the time as a passenger on a 737, but after about 100 takeoffs in an Archer, finally heard it twice today and it sounded exactly the same. I was rotating about 65 KTS, which is a little fast, and don’t really get it at the lower speeds.

It’s not as pronounced as stall buffeting, more like an oscillation or groan that runs transverse through the wings.

Full AI control for IMD testing

This was complete verbal control through a microphone. Didn’t have to do a damn thing except hook up the cables, power splitter, and tell Codex I had 8566B, ESG, and 8648C at xx addresses.

I told it I wanted PyVISA-based modules for separate control of the spectrum analyzer and signal generators, and that the signal generator module should be generic and able to control both types of generators. I then had it switch to AM and FM modulation, and it measured the tones on the spectrum analyzer and verified via the modulation index and Bessel functions that it was correct, which it was. It did all this automatically.

Then I told it that I wanted to do IMD sweeps from minus 40 to 0 dBm input levels for each tone, and I wanted IMD3 and IMD5. And it automatically did the code for that and spit out a CSV formatted table. I did need to tell it to go to auto resolution bandwidths and video bandwidths because it initially tried too narrow of a sweep, which was too slow. It could not find the proper command to do auto bandwidth, so then I had it do a web search to go through the PDF manuals, which it did, and it found out you needed to do a coupled command instead of an auto command. So once it figured out those values, then I was able to tell it to optionally use automatic bandwidth settings for the IMD tone extraction.

Anyway, this is kind of crazy. It works really well. Next, I'm going to try feeding my dual arb into a scope and see if it can draw a picture of a house, just by figuring all this shit on its own.

Mind you this is entirely under voice control. Will also try a webcam to see if I can give it picture feedback.

SDR app vibe coding

I know it’s shit, but hell, I did not even type into Codex to do this, just spoke into the microphone to guide it. Told it to stream samples from my Flexradio at certain IP and it figured it out, started with Python, then switched to C# to speed things up. I ran out of credits for today but damn thing works wonders. I’ll add sub-tuners next. Maybe try to vibe code an 89601B clone.

Anyway, going to have it control my test equipment next for extracting IQ correction tables for a transverter.

Also messing with Hermes. Maybe see if can agentically drive Microwave Office live through its Python API.

AI is crazy.

Finally Soloed

LOL 35 hours but I wanted to be sure I could handle 9 KT cross winds from both directions, in both left and right patterns, on all 4 runways, with 10G15. Trying to figure out my personal minimums. Weather and maintenance delays didn’t help.

Though we’ve covered all the maneuvers, 3 cross country (one through a bravo and landing there parallel to a 737), and dodged rain, clouds, and the bravo on the pre-solo stage check.

Weird to think I’ll now be let loose in the practice area.

Qorvo air cavity package rework

Anybody have to rework these new Qorvo air cavity packges? They are white and made of fiberglass, or so smell like that when burning. Anyway, hot air rework burns the shit out of the package, at least the overcoat on top. I’m wondering if they can only be reworked with IR, as they look fine coming off an SMT line. Of course the data sheet says not to rework.

KMCI touch and go

Nothing really, just a pre-solo student who got to do a xcountry today thru a Bravo.

Thank you to the controller who cleared us for a T&G in a little Piper on KMCI 19R and we were paralleling a 737 landing on 19L; just cooler than hell. CFI said I could not race them. Had to make sure my landing was spot-on as the pros were watching. Also cool to be climbing out at 76 KIAS and still see the end of runway, but KFOE is slightly longer at almost 13k’.

Anyway, probably boring for most but the highlight of my month. Now back to preparing for pre-solo stage check.
