Route Nine Legends lyrics

I know I'm a bit late to asking this since it has somehow already been over a year since the album released, but I wanted to give myself some time to turn it over in my mind first.

What do you make of the final part of Pat's singing in Route Nine Legends? The lyrics there are:

>I think that there are some things that we can't ever change, but I don't mean some great evil or cowardice inside.
There could be a lot of that, but sweep it all away: the thing that's left is empty, and it's full, and we can't kill it if we try.

Every time I listen to it I feel like on an emotional level I get it, but I struggle to put what he's saying here into any kind of words.

Censorship/blurring in the analog age?

I was watching a video about illegal street racing where the faces of the drivers and the license plates were censored and it made me realize something: I don't think I've ever considered how something like this would be achieved before computer editing.

I'm not unfamiliar with the general analog editing process of splicing film and general practical effects, but how would you go about hiding elements in a frame like this? Was it only done with masks, or was there a technique equivalent to blurring/pixel mosaics that could be done analog?

Largely, I guess I'm just curious if there was a technique that still implied some of the underlying details instead of fully black barring them.
