Two broken people who rode solo most of their lives

Two broken people who rode solo most of their lives

It’s definitely one of the things that connects them. Two broken people who rode solo most of their lives. I think they are more alike than a lot of people give them credit for. Shit Robert even subtly hints that when talking about the playground convo with Chase. “If i didn’t have you and dad, who knows where i would’ve ended up”.

I think he really emphasizes with Courtney and on a deeper level understands her struggles. Human behavior is a product of the environment they grew up in after all. And without having his Mecha Man legacy to uphold and a purpose to fight for, Robert may have ended up even worse than Courtney since that’s the only thing that anchored him since his father’s death.

This Scene Is So Good

One of the things I love most about Courtney's character is that her desire to become a hero is not immediately obvious. Early on it is easy to see her as just another villain but if you pay attention to the details you realize she always wanted something different. She wants to be respected and She wants people to trust her. More than anything she wants to be good.

The tragedy is that she has lived her entire life on the opposite side of that dream. As a villain she is judged feared and mistreated. Nobody sees the person she wants to become. They only see what she is. That creates the conflict that defines her character.

When she finally gets an opportunity to do the right thing she is willing to risk everything because she has been carrying guilt ever since Robert entered her life. She is the one who planted the bomb on the Mecha Man suit and that guilt never leaves her. Every interaction with Robert carries the weight of something she cannot bring herself to admit.

That is why her line about telling them the truth in Episode 5 has so much meaning. On the surface she is encouraging honesty. Underneath those words she is talking about herself. She is the one hiding the truth. She knows she is responsible and she knows she hurt someone who has only ever treated her with kindness. She is waiting for the moment when Robert finds out because she believes he deserves to decide what happens next. She is not asking for forgiveness. She is accepting responsibility.

At the same time Courtney did not make that choice out of cruelty. She made it because she believed she had no other option. It was a matter of survival. She either obeyed or risked losing her own life. At the time Robert was just a stranger. Neither of them knew that months later they would meet work together and completely change each other's lives.

The tragedy that connected them also became the reason they both grew as people. Through each other they found something they had been missing for years. They found understanding. They slowly lowered the walls around themselves and for the first time in a long time they experienced what it felt like to simply be normal people instead of living behind masks.

Robert never really had a normal life. Ever since he was a child he carried the responsibility of being Mecha Man. His whole identity revolved around being a hero. Courtney never had a normal life either. Unlike Chase who had people to guide him Courtney never had that support. Chase learned what it meant to be a hero because he had people who showed him those values. Courtney never had that chance and that is one of the reasons she became a villain.

That is what makes Chase Robert and Courtney so interesting. They are reflections of one another. Each one represents a different path that someone with similar pain could have taken. They are connected by trauma by loss and by the choices they make afterward.

Robert and Courtney are especially similar. They have similar personalities. They have similar interests. They have similar emotional wounds. They both lived difficult lives. They both made mistakes. They both struggle with guilt and self worth. They both carry emotional burdens that the other understands without needing an explanation. Robert spent years fighting depression while trying to carry the responsibility of being Mecha Man. Courtney spent years believing she would never be anything more than the villain everyone expected her to be.

Their relationship works because it is not based on perfection. It is built on understanding. They challenge each other. They make mistakes. They argue. They hurt each other. They also help each other become better people. They do not ignore each other's flaws. They support each other through them. That is what makes their connection feel real.

Even something as simple as Courtney offering Robert a donut early in the story shows who she really is. She was not trying to flirt with him. She wanted him to see her as a good person. Robert was focused on his job as a dispatcher so he misunderstood the situation and became frustrated. Courtney became frustrated too. Over time those awkward moments turned into trust. Then they became friends. Eventually they became something much deeper.

If you choose the romantic route their feelings develop naturally because they are built on everything they experienced together. Their relationship is not perfect and that is exactly why it feels believable. They become each other's support system and encourage each other to keep moving forward despite their mistakes and insecurities.

That is also why this scene is so important. At first Courtney's words can sound like she wants Robert to see her romantically. That is not what she is really saying. She wants him to believe that she can be good. She wants him to see the hero she hopes she can become.

Being a hero has always been her true dream. She wants to help people. She wants to protect others. She wants to become someone worthy of respect. The romance if it happens is only the result of that journey. It is not the reason for it. The heart of Courtney's story has always been redemption. Robert's belief in her gives her the courage to believe in herself.
