Tomorrow, 6/11, City of Savannah to spend nearly $65M for a parking garage.
More info from the city's agenda for tomorrow afternoon: https://agenda.savannahga.gov/publishing/june-11-2026-city-council-regular-meeting/1585_12350.html
TL;DR: the city thinks it's a good use of taxpayer funds to take on over $30M in debt, paying nearly $65M with interest included, for a "$27.2M Project Fund".
I hope everyone remembers that the city is happy to take on massive debt for a garage next time someone tries to say there isn't money for real services like public schools or public transit.
This is also a good opportunity to call your alderman to remind them that minimum parking requirements create suburban wastelands like Pooler, not walkable and accessible communities like historic Savannah. Our zoning code should be improved by eliminating parking minimums. Nobody moves to Savannah for the abundant parking.
