Cadmium Chloride - Solved.
It turns out that cadmium chloride used to be a common treatment for display textiles to prevent mildew growth in museum display cabinets. It was also used to wrap specimens for long-term storage. The practise was at it it's peak between 1920-1950.
This means of course that these specimens were likely in storage for quite some time before being rediscovered, and Mario's initial claim that the first findings were not archaeological could be true.
