How important is "conveying your emotions" to you in composing?

I run into this assumption occasionally - that composers are writing to try to convey their innermost feelings through their music. This attitude has always struck me as a possibly a holdover from the Romantic Period where the idea of a composer was a "solitary man of genius - misunderstood and mercurial."
