Front desk or no?

Hey! We are expanding our locations and so far have gotten by without Front Desk staff. Our current studios are smaller, so the instructors manage any purchases or class admin. For any membership questions, clients email or call the studio manager (who also pops into the studio frequently to manage inventory, fix things, etc). We have a staff member who coordinates milestone celebrations with the instructors

Our next location is going to be many more machines, so I’m worried that there will be too much going on for the instructor to be able to manage all the admin between classes and still give great new client onboarding.

However, I guess I’m curious what tasks the Front Desk staff actually does DURING class? If the studio manager is taking care of client emails, does the Front Desk just prepare for the next class? It sort of seems like a lot of time to pay for someone to just be sitting in the studio. I know other studios use Front Desk as a sales engine, but to be honest when I visit other studios the front desk mostly just checks me in/waves goodbye- not a ton of selling.

Maybe I’m totally off base, would love to hear how you create an effective Front Desk! Thanks!!
