I recently bought Nabokov’s screenplay of Lolita and the entire time I couldn’t get the movie out of my head. Everything except for few things that couldn’t fit in the movie was exactly as the 1997 movie. I heard a lot of people talking about Lyne misunderstanding the book, but I think it’s not entirely correct. Sure, I have my own issues with the movie (most of it is the lead actors being very close in age to the characters and kissing. God, why must a 15 yo girl kiss an old dude? Especially in front of the recording team and for every perv to see?) But otherwise I think the movie was a great adaptation and I didn’t think it was misleading or romanticized at all. In fact I was disgusted and uncomfortable and emotional for poor Dolores the entire film.
