25M (SDE) & Sister 28F (QA) earning ₹1.52L combined: Drowning in ₹63k/mo Chits, managing everything alone, with upcoming goals of Sister's Wedding & Buying a Home. Need a reality check.
Hi everyone,
I (25M, SDE with 3 YOE) and my sister (28F, Medical Coding QA with 8 YOE) earn a combined household take-home of ₹1.52L/month.
Right now, I bear 100% of the financial management load for the entire family. Every month, my sister transfers ₹80,000 of her ₹90,000 salary to my bank account. From my account, I pay out the rent, all chits, loans, utilities, and bills. My mom has zero involvement in running household money, and my sister is hands-off beyond sending the transfer.
I feel burnt out carrying this sole mental load. More critically, our future goals are approaching fast, but we have zero plan:
- Sister’s Marriage (Target: Next 1–2 years): She is 28. Chit 4 was already withdrawn to purchase some wedding jewellery, but the actual ceremony, hall, and other expenses have zero dedicated cash savings.
- Buying a Family Home (Target: Next 4–5 years): My parents currently live in a rented home (₹8k), and we want to buy our own place. But we have no down payment saved up.
Our dad (60) runs a small tailor shop; his income primarily covers daily vegetables and milk.
Here is our exact financial reality:
1. Incomes & Current Inflow Routing
- My take-home: ₹62,000
- Sister's take-home: ₹90,000 (transfers ₹80,000 to my account, keeps ₹10,000)
- Total Combined Inflows: ₹1,52,000/month
- Existing Liquid Savings: ₹3.5 Lakh (sitting in my savings account)
2. Fixed Outflows & Debt
- Family Home rent: ₹8,000
- Dad’s tailor shop rent: ₹5,000
- Sister’s PG rent (Bangalore): ₹7,000
- My Education Loan EMI: ₹5,000 (₹1.63L balance remaining)
- Subtotal: ₹25,000/month
3. Informal Chit Funds (41% of Income!)
- Chit 1: ₹5,000/mo (₹1L chit)
- Chit 2: ₹5,000/mo (₹1L chit)
- Chit 3: ₹8,000/mo (savings chit)
- Chit 4: ₹20,000/mo (₹4L chit, already bid/withdrawn for gold/jewels for sister)
- Chit 5: ₹25,000/mo (₹5L online chit)
- Subtotal Chits: ₹63,000/month
4. Lifestyle & Discretionary Spends (Paid via CC)
- My CC bill: ₹30,000 – ₹40,000 (covers EB, Wi-Fi, OTT, recharges, dining out, movies, food outings)
- Sister’s CC bill: ₹20,000 – ₹30,000 (shopping, personal outings, clothes)
- Subtotal Lifestyle: ₹50,000 – ₹70,000/month
The Breaking Point:
On peak months, our outflows reach ₹1.58 Lakhs, exceeding our ₹1.52L income and quietly depleting my ₹3.5L bank savings.
We have zero mutual funds, zero SIPs, and no wedding or down-payment fund.
- My sister doesn't see where her ₹80k actually goes, which fuels high CC spends.
- My mom has no budget autonomy for running the house, so unexpected cash demands keep popping up.
- If my sister gets married in the next 1–2 years, her ₹90k income contribution will likely drop or redirect, leaving me alone with the remaining chits and household expenses.
What I Want to Achieve:
I want to move from "I handle everything" to a decentralized, goal-aligned structure:
- Mom’s Domain: Give my mom a fixed, predictable monthly budget into a dedicated zero-balance account (with UPI/debit card) to manage home rent, shop rent, groceries, and local chits.
- Sister’s Domain: Stop the blind ₹80k transfer. She pays her Bangalore rent directly, funds her own designated share of household commitments, caps her CC bill, and starts building her own wedding emergency fund.
- My Domain: Manage my loan, online chit, cap my CC spends, and begin investing for long-term goals (down payment fund).
Questions for the community:
- Planning for Sister's Marriage (1–2 yr horizon): Since she earns ₹90k, how should she prioritize saving for her own wedding vs contributing to family chits? What instruments (FD/RD/Arbitrage funds) make sense given the short horizon?
- Post-Marriage Income Risk: Once my sister gets married, I assume her financial priority will shift to her own household. How do we prepare our family cash flow now so I am not stranded paying ₹63k in chits and home expenses on my ₹62k salary?
- Home Buying Feasibility: With a 4–5 year horizon for a house, is it realistic to start saving for a down payment now, or should we pause the home goal completely until all chits mature and the education loan is cleared?
- Delegation to Mom: How do you ease a parent into managing a monthly home budget without overwhelming them?
- Education Loan vs. Emergency Fund: Should I use ₹1.63L from my ₹3.5L savings to close the education loan right now, or hold the full ₹3.5L as a family emergency fund since our dad is 60 without a pension?
Looking forward to your honest feedback and reality checks.
