Salary in Dublin

Can I live on €42k a year comfortably in Dublin? I’m single, and will be commuting around 110 km each way every day, or renting a room in Dublin if I find one

I’m trying to figure out what my actual net take-home pay would be, but I’m getting different figures from various online tax calculators.

Thanks

Advice buying first car

Hi all,

I’ve recently accepted a job in Dublin, but unfortunately the housing situation is terrible and I haven’t been able to find anywhere to rent yet .

As a result, I’m looking at commuting around 120km each way, 5 days a week, so roughly 1,200km per week. Thankfully I already have my driving licence.

Most of the journey will be motorway driving, so I’m looking for something that’s reliable, economical and comfortable enough for that kind of mileage.

My budget is around €4,500, and I’m realistic that I’ll probably be looking at an older car with fairly high mileage.

What would you guys recommend I look at? Any particular models/engines that would suit this type of commute, and anything I should specifically avoid?

Also, would you be leaning towards a diesel given the amount of motorway driving, or is petrol still worth considering at this budget?

Any advice on what to look out for when viewing cars would be massively appreciated. Cheers!

SUSI eligibility ?

Hi all,
I already have an Honours Level 8 degree in Computing. Because of the terrible tech job market, I haven’t been able to land a job in the field and I’ve been stuck working in hospitality instead
feels like there’s no future for me🥲.

I’m considering going back as a mature student to do another Level 8 course in a different field.
I never applied for or received SUSI funding for my first degree. If I apply this time, would I be eligible for SUSI?
Thanks in advance.

Job

Hi everyone,

I recently got a job offer in Dublin, and they’ve asked me to start within the next two weeks.

The issue is that I still haven’t managed to secure accommodation. I’ve been applying every day, but as many of you know, the rental market is incredibly difficult at the moment.

Commuting unfortunately isn’t a realistic option for me due to the distance.

I’m wondering if it’s reasonable to ask the employer if I can push my start date back by a couple of weeks while I sort out accommodation, or would that create a bad first impression?

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated.

Hey everyone,

I’ve made it to the 5th round of interviews for a SOC Level 1 role, and they told me this next one will be heavily scenario-based.

So far I’ve been preparing around phishing, ransomware, and DDoS scenarios focusing on triage, investigation steps, and escalation.

For those already working in a SOC or who’ve gone through similar late stage interviews:

•	What kind of scenarios did you get at this stage?

•	How deep do they expect you to go for a Tier 1 role?

Appreciate any advice

TIA

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some honest advice.

I have a 1.1 degree in Computing, but over time I’ve realised I might have chosen the wrong career path. I’m seriously considering switching to medicine.

I’ve been looking into Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) in Ireland. From what I understand, I meet the requirement of having a 2.1 Level 8 degree, but I don’t have an Irish Leaving Cert I completed secondary school outside the EU and did a pre-university foundation year.

I’m currently 28, planning to apply around 30 after saving some money. That would mean graduating around 35.

So I guess my main questions are:

Is 35 too late to graduate as a doctor?

Has anyone here gone into medicine from a completely different field like computing?

Will my non-EU secondary education be an issue for GEM entry in Ireland?

Any advice on the GAMSAT + application process in my situation?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s taken a similar path or knows how this works.

Thanks!
