Avalon Hill Crowdfunding Conversation

Disclaimer: I'm not advocating anything, I'm just curious what people think.

I'm coming down off the Zombicide Pirate Crowdfund (which is technically still ongoing) and I got thinking, would it make any sense for Avalon Hill to do Gamefound crowd funding for a future expansion?

Hasbro uses HasLab to do their own in-house crowd funding, but they also seem to be moving away from directly supporting AH, based on some comments they made on Discord about liking autonomy from Hasbro and the fact they pulled most of the HQ products from their website. So in theory, AH could use something like Gamefound, which seems to be very successful, to roll out a new expansion.

If they did so, I would expect them to offer discounted collections of older expansions, possibly re-print Rogue/Monk, as well as adding exclusive figures/quests/cards as stretch goals. Plus dice, 3D furniture (maybe as an upgrade to First Light buyers), monster packs and so on.

If AH ever did this, what would you like to see? Since we're dreaming, you can say Guardian Knights if you want :)

What would be some potential pros or cons to doing this do you think?

Against the Ogre Horde Quests - Remastered to use the Caverns board from First Light

I just want to say thank you again to everyone who downloaded the first three questbooks, over 300 of you!

I have now completed all the quests in Against the Ogre Horde! You can find them here:

https://theboardgamekeepersguild.itch.io/caverns-edition-against-the-ogre-horde

If you are unfamiliar with the project, I wanted to have more excuses to use the First Light caverns map, so I'm redoing every single official quest to use the caverns board. The idea being that Zargon can then choose whether to stick with the traditional board, or send the heroes into the caverns, sporadically, to mix things up and keep the heroes on their toes.

I hope you enjoy. Next up will probably be Prophecy of Telor but I'm taking some time off this project to work on other things.

If you find any issue or have any suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks again!

Caverns Collection Version 1.1

After some feedback and some fine-toothed combing, I have recently updated ALL the cavern conversion maps for the Core Game System, Kellar's Keep, and Return of the Witch Lord.

You can grab them here: https://theboardgamekeepersguild.itch.io/

If you missed the original announcement, I really wanted to be able to use the First Light Caverns board more often, so I went overboard and converted every single quest from New Beginnings, through the core system, into the forsaken tunnels, through Kellar's Keep, and then through Return of the Witch Lord.

This will give any Zargon the ability to swap out a cavern map, anytime their heroes start to grow bored of the grand old classic board.

I took a stab at it. Here's some guidelines I used:

  1. I made the call on Unique or not. Generally if it's "X of X" (ex. Armband of Ice) I assume it's an enchantment and not necessarily special.
  2. If the card specifically says something that makes it sound unique, then it is.
  3. Unique items are priced higher.
  4. If there's a potion to replicate the effect(s), I factor the potion price into the artifact's price.
  5. If it's a "Forever" artifact (1 per quest or no limits) it's priced higher.
  6. If there's already a similar piece of equipment, I often factored that price into the artifact price.
  7. If the effect is situational (ice protection or Elf only) I priced it lower.
  8. If the effect doesn't take up a "Slot", essentially passive perks, I priced it higher.
  9. I made the call on body slot. I figure only 1 neck (amulet), 1 feet (boots), 1 head (helm/crown), 1 body (armor/bracers), 1 or 2 hands (weapons/shield), 2 fingers (rings), 2 biceps (Armlets), and 2 wrists (armbands and probably Elven Bracers?)

Anyway, I'm open to any feedback. I feel like I may have underpriced things, especially the rings. What do y'all think?

UPDATE: After some feedback, I'm going through and tweaking some things. Version 1.1 coming soon.

I just wanted to thank everyone that checked out the Cavern Collection I started! There's been well over 300 views and over 100 downloads! I hope every one is enjoying them and welcome any feedback you may have as you play through them. I didn't have time to play test them all, so if you find something that doesn't work, please let me know and I'll fix it up ASAP!

If anyone missed the original announcement, I converted every quest in the Core Game System, Kellar's Keep, Return of the Witch Lord, and the appropriate downloadable quests to use the First Light Caverns board. This allows Zargon to choose whether to send the Heroes to the standard board or the caverns board for any quest in the Core game or the first 2 expansions!

You can get the PDFs here:

Wouldn't it be a lot of fun to discuss how much Artifacts should cost? You know, come up with reasonable pricing for heroes that want to buy something they missed or lost, or so that they could sell it at 50% to a shop?

Someone could suggest something and we could discuss it.

Totally just for fun, I'm not just looking for someone to do the work for me while I work on other homebrew ideas *wink wink*

I'll go first. Borin's Armor should be $1600, double what normal plate mail costs given the huge advantage of not losing the 1D6 on movement.

Ok, the truth is I keep running into situations where I'm like "Man, I wish I had a price list for artifacts!" Whether it's my Wizardless party looking to cash in on the Wizard only artifacts they found, or wanting to do a "Random Artifacts" table of low-value artifacts like Rabbit Boots or Magic Throwing Daggers.

The latest is I'm making a roll table that Zargon uses at the beginning of each quest to determine a quest event. One of these events will be a traveling merchant selling some scrolls, potions, and non-unique artifacts (all at inflated prices).

Anyway, it's time to put prices on all the artifacts (including scrolls). Anyone want to help out?

TL:DR = There's remastered versions of EVERY Official Quest from New Beginnings through the Core set, to the Forsaken Tunnels through Kellar's Keep, and finally on through Return of the Witch Lord! They are as similar to the originals as I could get, but completely re-worked so they are instead using the Caverns board from First Light! You can find them at the link above.

The Caverns Project:

You can read all about what it is and why I made it on the pages and in the dev log. The short version is I wanted more excuses to use the Caverns board and rather than picking and choosing what *I* thought would be good quests on that board, I decided to just do them all and let the Internet Zargons decide when to use the standard, and when to use the caverns board! I'll be the first to admit some of these conversions just do not work well in the caverns, but they're all here anyway, just in case you disagree or want to use one anyway.

My new group of Heroes just started New Beginnings and I haven't decided if they'll go through Core or FL at first. If they do Core, I'll use a mix of standard and these caverns quests.

But as they approach KK/RotWL, I'll probably be looking continue this project into PoT/SQT, then FH/JoD/AtOH, then MotM/RotDM/WoM/CoPD. If this project is wildly popular, I may move the timeline up, so if you want to see something, just ask.

Otherwise I'll go back to working on a few other things, including re-sized custom tile overlays for the larger sized play mats (both standard and cavern versions of every tile overlay!)

Still here? Wow... ok so...

What is the Board Game Keeper's Guild?

As some of you may know, I have a bazillion homebrew projects going at any one time, and not only for HeroQuest. I tried running a place where HQ Homebrewers (including me) could host their content for free and where I could brain dump everything I learned about the history of HQ (https://www.boardgame.quest). But I don't really like editing HTML, I'm not interested in learning WordPress, and who wants to keep updating a brain dump every time AH passes gas? Not I it turns out. The site is still up, but I'm not going to keep working on it.

I decided instead to post my content on itch.io. It seems the most flexible for all the different types of content I want to post, and allows for tipping if anyone feels so inclined. Tipping is to support and encourage me, not to pay for my content, which is always free.

I was going to wait a bit more before I started publishing, so I had a bunch of cool stuff for you all, but I've been sitting on the caverns thing for over a month now while I work on finishing up a few other projects (and madly sling paint at my pile of shame!). So rather than keeping it all under lock and key, I decided it was time to set it free.
