Why is Pentecostalism constantly mocked online?

I’m a Oneness Pentecostal, and honestly I’m getting tired of the constant Pentecostal slander online. People can disagree with our theology if they want that’s fine but a lot of the criticism turns into straight-up mockery instead of actual discussion.

Every time Pentecostals get brought up, people immediately jump to “cult,” “fake Christians,” “all emotional,” or act like nobody in Pentecostal churches actually studies the Bible. That’s just not true. There are millions of sincere Pentecostal Christians who genuinely love God, pray, study scripture, help people, and try to live holy lives.

One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of people either had a bad experience with one Pentecostal church or met a few uneducated Pentecostals, and then they lump all Pentecostals together because of it. That would be like meeting one bad Baptist or Catholic and assuming every church in those denominations is the same.

My church has a lot of genuinely smart people who know scripture deeply. My dad, for example, is one of the smartest Bible-focused people I know. We spend a lot of time studying doctrine, history, context, and scripture not just emotions and hype like people online assume.

You can disagree with speaking in tongues, holiness standards, or Oneness theology without acting like Pentecostals are automatically ignorant or deceived. A lot of our beliefs come from taking scripture seriously and trying to follow what we see in the Bible, especially concerning repentance, holiness, baptism, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

I’m not asking everyone to agree with us. I just think there should be more honest discussion and less stereotyping and cheap shots toward Pentecostals in general.

Why is not believing in the Trinity considered heretical?

I’m an Apostolic Pentecostal, and I don’t believe in the Trinity. I’ve seen many posts saying that Oneness Pentecostals are heretical, and I’m trying to understand why.

I do believe in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, but not as three distinct persons. I believe God is one, and that Jesus is the full manifestation of God.

For example, Genesis 1:1 says God created the heavens and the earth, showing God is one Creator. In Matthew 28:19 it mentions the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, but in Acts 2:38 baptism is done in the name of Jesus, which I understand as showing that name.

I also don’t believe in an “eternal Son.” John 3:16 says “only begotten Son,” and the definition of begotten is bringing something into existence, so I’m trying to understand how that fits with the idea of an eternal Son.

I believe the Holy Spirit is not a separate person, but God Himself, since God is a Spirit and He is holy. When the Bible speaks of God being manifested in the flesh, it says God was manifested, not specifically “the Son,” which is part of why I see Jesus as God revealed in flesh.

When Jesus prayed, I see that as an example for us of depending on God. And in John 14:26, where it says the Father will send the Comforter, I understand that as God working through His Spirit, since He is omnipresent.

I’m not trying to argue, I just want to understand why rejecting the Trinity is considered heretical from your perspective.
