Feels like they are more of a 7” band to me, but still, here’s my 12”s.

So many great b-sides. I just realised that a video of the back covers would’ve been more interesting. All UK except one maverick. Most of them I just bought when they were released, then gaps were filled in later. I’m sure someone will think of something I’m missing lol.

304: The Pretenders - The Pretenders (plus swipe for an “(Un)Related” quiz)

Not long finished Chrissie Hynde’s autobiography. Good stuff. Decent recent albums too; both solo and as Pretenders. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today what links The Pretenders to The Kinks and Simple Minds? I’ll pop a spoiler-hidden answer in the comments later (though I think someone will beat me to it).

303: Isaac Hayes : Shaft (plus swipe for an “(Un)Related” quiz)

Is there a consensus on the best ever soundtrack album? I think compilations are excluded from the 1001 so I guess there aren’t too many included. This one is certainly up there for me anyway. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today what links the 3 in my bonus pic (Ween, Ozzy, Elton) to Isaac? I’ll pop a spoiler-hidden answer in the comments later.

302: Beck - Odelay (plus swipe for an “(Un)Related” quiz)

Odelay is one of the most fun and diverse albums of the 90s and Beck managed to continue to get better and better beyond it too. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today what links Beck to Van Morrison and Them?

1962 I cannot believe you.

I’m sure everyone has their favourite year, and I haven’t even checked if I prefer any others, but I would be surprised if there are many to rival this! (I know Tijuana Moods was recorded 5 years earlier, but still!)

Reached 300. Here’s my 5s from my last 50 (plus for ref: 32 5s from the first 250 that I already posted). Have I got more generous with scoring? And why are my 5s such a sausagefest? Can I blame the 1001?

I only count a few women (on the Sly and Prince albums) I’m sure it’s probably already been discussed, but is the 1001 notably lacking in women? Tbf, my “albums of the year” have only become more female focused over the past 10 years, so maybe the balance has just been improving generally, or my tastes have changed. Were women (with a few exceptions) so glaringly not taken “seriously” enough in the 60s and 70s.

299: The Temptations - All Directions (plus swipe for a nice and easy “(Un)Related” quiz)

Norman Whitfield’s vision of the new Psyche Soul Temptations reboot is more than established by ‘All Directions’ and I for one am fully here for it. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today, what links The Temptations with Muddy Waters and Bob Dylan? I’ll pop a spoiler-hidden answer in the comments later.

298: The Beach Boys - Surf’s Up (plus more Beachy goodness)

I know there’s a lot of talk about certain acts with too many entries in the 1001, but I would like to put the case that The Beach Boys have too few. The 3 albums that make it; this one, Today!, Pet Sounds (plus of course Brian’s 2004 version of Smile) are wonderful, but I would argue that one or more of the 4 albums in my bonus pic could be added. If you find yourself pleasantly surprised when Surf’s Up is generated for you, do yourself a favour and dig deeper into the post-Smile discography.

297 Electric Light Orchestra - Out of the Blue (plus swipe for an “(Un)Related” quiz).

There haven’t been too many pop acts who have pulled off the successful double album but ‘Out of the Blue’ is definitely one of them. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today can you find a link to ELO from both ZZ Top and Daft Punk? I’ll put a spoiler-hidden answer in the comments later.

296: The Kinks - …are The Village Green Preservation Society

No Sunday school for me but it is “kinda” satisfying to post this while lazing on a sunny afternoon.

294 Prince - Sign “☮️” the Times (plus wallowing in SotT bonus)

I’m generally in the 1001 world to discover and learn, not to celebrate the albums I already know I love. But I will make the occasional exception. Even before the Super Deluxe Edition was released, ‘Sign”o” the Times’ was already a behemoth of an album for me. I had the album, all the singles and when vinyl was at its deepest pit of unpopularity in the 90s, I managed to get my hands on some bargain concert albums (Prince being notorious for not releasing live material).

The Super Deluxe though was out of this world. 3xDouble albums of full songs that were left off the album! Also included was a double album of singles, mixes and edits, and a triple LP of a beautifully recorded live show to put the ones I already had in their place. This is all too much for most listeners, but it was a goldmine for someone like me. It is one of quite a few Prince albums I would call 5⭐️ and probably the greatest representation of his abilities in one release.

2 in the mail today and I realised this finishes the regular studio albums for me:) 2 whole new albums I’ve NEVER heard before too!

291: Sly & The Family Stone - There’s a Riot Goin’ On (plus swipe for an easy “(Un)Related” quiz)

The amazing S&TFS!!! I feel another good score coming on. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today, what links all the albums in the bonus pic to There’s a Riot Goin’ On? I don’t expect it will be necessary, but if it is, I will put a spoiler-hidden answer in the comments later.

290: Neil Young - Harvest (plus swipe for an “(Un)Related” quiz)

My 5th Neil Young album before getting a 1/3 of the way through the 1001. I feel a lot of stars assembling for my review. I love the photo on the back cover of Neil and the Stray Gators in a barn working-up the material for the album. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today what links ‘Harvest’ with Frank Zappa’s ‘Waka/Jawaka’ and Bob Dylan/The Band’s ‘Basement Tapes’. I’ll put a spoiler-hidden answer in the comments later.

u/SuccessfulGap138 — 17 days ago

289: Guns N’ Roses - Appetite for Destruction (plus swipe for an “(Un)Related” quiz)

Well, a cornerstone of 80s hair metal then? Probably overdue a spin tbh. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today what links both The Bangles and Van Halen to GnR?

288: Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest

Of the US indie that I came across in the 2010s (I’m rarely cutting edge lol) Deerhunter along with St Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Animal Collective and Dirty Projectors are who have had the longest lasting impact for me. I’m not convinced this is my personal favourite Deerhunter albums, and I would probably consider the Atlas Sound albums as alternative options too (essentially lead Deerhunter Bradford Cox’s solo albums) but I am very glad they are included in the 1001 and I would recommend anyone to explore beyond this if it appeals to you when you hear it.

287: Santana - Abraxas (plus swipe for more Mati Klarwein)

A whole week without an album on vinyl. Since I have been acquiring albums I like on vinyl all my wage earning life, it’s hardly surprising a week of non-vinyl hasn’t been the finest week of my 1001 journey. I guess it was a week where I might have discovered things I didn’t realise I was into, but sadly it was mostly just things I enjoyed more than I expected, but not “I must own this!” more. Anyway, hopefully back to a good stretch next. Here’s Abraxas. I could have made a quiz but there’s too many potential links between Santana and Mikes Davis for cover art to be a clear answer, so instead, just enjoy the full magnificence of artwork by German painter Mati Karwein whose work is on the gatefold sleeve of Abraxas and 2 incredible Miles albums.

282: Jay-Z - The Blueprint (plus swipe for an “(Un)Related” quiz)

I’m weirdly not particularly familiar with The Blueprint so I’m happy to see it generated. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. So what links the 4 albums in my bonus pic to my AotD? I’ll pop a spoiler-hidden answer in the comments later if no one has got it already.

Spreading my Keith wings. Only one spin in but I’m impressed already. Feels like a record that will keep on giving.

281: The Lemonheads - It’s a Shame About Ray (plus swipe for a fun picture quiz)

I actually had today’s album spinning on a recent car journey. It’s a quality listen. I thought I’d have a laugh using the cover art: Can you name the 4x60s albums? Spoiler-hidden answers please… > ! text ! < but with zero gaps.
