260: Air - Moon Safari (plus swipe for an easy Sunday morning (Un)Related quiz)

Moon Safari is an outrageously perfect album to have generated on a Sunday morning! “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today what (specifically) relates Air to Justice, Daft Punk and Wuz?

255: The Beatles - The Beatles

This is the one and only copy of this masterpiece I have ever owned. Bought it new 38 years ago. Who knows how many times it has been listened to? There’s a lot of talk about looking after vinyl, some pretty extreme. Today’s listen was not troubled by crackles or skips and the sleeve and its contents are in great shape and all I do is handle my records with the respect they deserve. Nothing extreme. My records have moved house about 10 times (hopefully never again) they have been well used, but with just a little care, I’m happy to report they can give a lifetime of joy.

253: Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasuredome (plus some of the album’s 12” singles)

I was very young at the time, but FGTH was the biggest story in music in 1984. The Frankie says Relax t-shirts everywhere, record getting banned but the BBC (and naturally going to No.1) and endless remix versions of Two Tribes getting the fans to buy the single over and over again. I had zero money in those days but over the years I’ve enjoyed picking up these 12”s anytime I’ve spotted one in a bargain bin. I think today I’ll investigate how many more Two Tribes 12”s are out there waiting to join this collection. They may have been a hyped-up flash in the pan, but there is a lot about the music that is way more accomplished and powerful than it had any business being.
Edit: typo on 1984 (lol I just did it again <there initially)

Quarter of the way through, here’s my 5s.

Not looking at any of them thinking I was generous; I know there’s a few that are outliers, but they are no-brainer 5s for me and I didn’t start this project expecting to agree with the majority on everything. I’ve really been enjoying the trip so far, and even this far, I’m sitting here wondering what tomorrow will bring. Loving the community vibe too:)

251: Buzzcocks - Another Music in a Different Kitchen (plus swipe for today’s fun (Un)Related quiz)

I am in support of the “no compilations” policy for the 1001 books, but if I was to make an exception it would definitely be for Buzzcocks. However, I will try to overlook my longstanding disappointment with their proper albums compared with “Singles Going Steady” and relish my time with this album today; it’s been a while so who knows, I might love it now.

“(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today is a genre busting delight (R&B, blues, metal, jazz) so what links these albums to my AotD? The O’Jays - Family Reunion, R.L. Burnside - Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down, Anthrax - Among the Living, Miles Davis - At Carnegie Hall.

The randomness of the generator: this finishes CCR for my1001 and yet I only just got my first Bowie! “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. It’s really hot where I am so I’m not feeling like making things difficult…So what links Status Quo to my AotD today?

248: David Bowie - Young Americans (plus swipe for today’s (Un)Related quiz)

It’s taken until 248 to get my first Bowie!! As a big fan it’s notable that I get this album first because it is far from my favourite, but let’s see if today’s listen will alter that. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. Today, what links Bowie with JB? I will pop the spoiler-hidden answer in comments later.

246: The Boo Radleys - Giant Steps (plus swipe for today’s (Un)Related quiz)

Giant Steps was, and remains, one of my absolute favourite albums of the 1990s. Totally jam packed with joyous experimentation. In this one album, they show a stronger case for Beatles of the 90s than Oasis did with their entire output. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record (or records) that seem unrelated. So what links The Boo Radleys’ ‘Giant Steps’ with Clinic’s ‘Internal Wrangler’ and Wayne Shorter’s ‘Juju’? Answer will be spoiler-hidden in the comments later today.

The album wherein The Shamen went all-in on their transformation from drug-toting psych rockers, to drug-toting ravers. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find the link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus, seemingly unrelated record. 242: Portishead - Third (plus swipe for today’s (Un)Related quiz)

Portishead must’ve been up all night thinking of a title for this, their third album. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and my seemingly unrelated bonus record in the second pic. Today find the link between Portishead’s third album ‘Third’ and The Coral’s fourth ‘The Invisible Invasion’. For me it was a real TIL moment! Answer will be spoiler-hidden in the comments later.

241: The Isley Brothers - 3+3 (no quiz today just an Isleys tip)

This was the first Isley Brothers album I ever bought. I’m not completely sure if it’s still my favourite but I’m comfortable with it being the choice for the 1001 because it is excellent and includes probably my favourite Isleys track “What it Comes Down To”. They just need to be in the book so I’m just glad they weren’t overlooked. For anyone who has enjoyed ‘3+3’ in the 1001 and might like to investigate them further, I’m here today to offer a tip…

As you can see in my bonus pic, while the wardrobe department were working overtime, whoever was in charge of art direction was less innovative, but this is in your favour. If you ever spot an Isley’s album and aren’t sure if it is worth your hard earned cash, just confirm it’s from the 70s (probably on the T-Neck label via Epic) and the lads are dressed in outrageously OTT threads and you’ve got yourself a winner. The problem comes when you spot a second or third, you might find it tricky to know if it’s one you already own.

240: The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat (plus swipe for today’s (Un)Related quiz.

It may not be the correct Velvets album for this “Sunday Morning”, but they are all welcome anytime! The “(Un)Related” quiz challenges you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and the record (or records) in my bonus pic. So from White Light/White Heat link to these. 239: My Bloody Valentine - m b v (plus swipe for a nice and easy Saturday morning (Un)Related quiz)

The fabulous My Bloody Valentine had a big impact on me as a kid. You may even spot my guitar in the background which I definitely chose to save up for all those years ago specifically because I had been pummelled live by a twin assault of them in one of those You Made Me Realise moments. The “(Un)Related” quiz challenges you to find the link between my 1001 AotD and the record (or records) in my bonus pic. Today shouldn’t be too difficult. One of the records I feel is a particular giveaway. Drop your answer in the comments and have a good weekend! My solution will eventually appear spoiler-hidden in the comments.

238: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced (plus swipe for today’s (Un)Related quiz)

I just mentioned Hendrix in my recent Cream Disraeli Gears review! The day before that, it was Monkees Headquarters, in which I mentioned Sgt Pepper both of which came out just a few weeks after this in ‘67. Just some more 1001 coincidences. “(Un)Related” is a quiz that asks you to find a link between my 1001 album of the day and a bonus record or records. Today link The Experience with The Move and Amen Corner (and also Pink Floyd but as some of you may already know about me, it’s unsurprising that I am not able to include them in my bonus picture; that’s my 3rd PF burn in about a week😂)

237: Dexy’s Midnight Runners - Too Rye Ay (plus swipe for NOT (Un)Related…is that just Related? Anyway no quiz today sorry)

As a legitimate Dexys fan, I would still not claim that “all 3” of their albums should be included in the 1001. I would however claim that they have far more than 3 albums, 4 of which can be seen in the bonus pic. They just shortened the name to simply Dexys dropping the Midnight Runners. I think along with Costello and Bowie, Dexys get the most flack for over-representation, maybe Neil Young too? I’m probably forgetting some. I’m not trying to stand up for any of them (though I could) I’d just like to congratulate everyone who can ignore hackneyed gripes surrounding anything in the 1001 and give each album its fair listen.

234: Booker T & The M.G.s - Green Onions (plus swipe for a nice and easy (Un)Related quiz)

What does everyone think of this album? It took me a long time to find one and I ended up giving in to a reissue. Maybe the wait built it up too much, or I’ve maybe been spoiled by Jimmy Smith albums but this has seemed like “the hit plus…” so far. Maybe today’s listen will change that. (Un)Related is a quiz that asks you to find a link between my 1001 AotD and a bonus record. What links BT&tMGs with The Band. Answer will appear spoile-hidden in the comments.

232: Suede - Dog Man Star (plus swipe for today’s (Un)Related quiz)

As you can see from the picture, Dog Man Star is one of the VERY few albums that I have more than one copy of. Which probably tells you my rating is likely to be. “(Un)Related” is a bonus record or records that seems unrelated to my 1001 AotD but there is nevertheless a link. Today, what links Suede to The Stones, AC/DC, Genesis and Fleetwood Mac? Answer will appear spoiler-hidden in the comments a little later.
