Just finished my first 10!

Here's my ranking of my first 10 albums --

Stumbled across this challenge ten days ago when my Reddit algorithm fed it to me, and I've been having a blast so far. What's been the most fun is seeing how wrong my expectations have been. If you would have asked me to rank this list of ten without having listened to them (Grace is the only one that I had heard in its entirety before) and using only my knowledge of the artists, I wouldn't have come even marginally close to guessing right.

Can't wait to hear the rest!

Two in a Row!

I had never really listened to Sonic Youth in the past, but always meant to. A few days ago I got Goo and loved it. Easy 5 stars. To my pleasant surprise the next morning, I was greeted with Daydream Nation. Another 5 star album for me!

Has anyone else ever gotten the same artist two days in a row? Did you enjoy it?

In my #750 generated album, a few stats

Am I being too generous with some bands/albums? And too harsh on others?

Well, at least I’m definitely an enthusiast - I’m actually really excited about this project

I’ve been trying to listen to the album I’m assigned every day, and to be honest, after a while, when I look back at what I’ve listened to and reviewed, I wonder if I’m being too generous with the 5-star ratings I give. But I’ve enjoyed it so much, and I think this has helped me so much over the days (and also because of the discoveries I’ve been making—true new finds for me!) that the 5 stars end up reflecting that time so well spent as well ;-)

215: Radiohead - In Rainbows (plus swipe for (Un)Related)

Another day another amazing Radiohead album (I had Kid A recently). This is my copy of the special edition vinyl which I was kindly gifted for some volunteer work I did around the time.

I’m not going to make today’s (Un)Related a quiz cos it’s just far too obscure, but when I was reading the In Rainbows wiki I noticed that the first recordings were not with Nigel Godrich because he was busy with Charlotte Gainsborough and Beck at the time, which gives me an excuse to share this amazing Gainsborough album produced by Beck. So that’s my (un)related link to today’s 1001 AotD.

Weekly General Music Discussion May 19-24

A few people expressed interest in having a thread to post more general discussions regarding music. I figured we'll try it out for a couple weeks and see how it goes!

I saw many people show it, so... why not?🥹

Controversial rankings. The high and the low ones. I am curious what conversations my opinions could bring and I am open to discuss

Why yes, I do need another hobby (Day 1)

I actually don't listen to music very much bc it makes me moody and pensive. I enjoyed sinking into the nostalgia with Tracy Chapman on this rainy evening, though. I've also been trying to liven up my journal with more doodles and colors, so I'm happy for the inspiration.

What's the chance? or is it pure coincidence?

So I have 1000+ albums to go. Listened to Nirvana yesterday and what's the next album? Foo Fighters their debut album.

I must say that's really really odd.

Is there anyone alse who had this too?

Complete! Number 778

Well, that's the list completed. It took me 5 years and the birth of my daughter, but I did it. Here are my takeaways to make a better list:

  1. No more than 4 albums per artist - this will push you to pick their truly great albums that need to be heard before you die.

  2. Don't put an album on just because it had one insanely great single; waste of a space.

  3. Too many psychedelic US albums.

  4. One Byrds album is fine.

  5. An album shouldn't be eligible for the list until it is at least a decade old. That gives us a much better idea on how culturally (high and low) important and the impact the album will have.

  6. I'm shocked there's no Japanese music on this list - it should be a given.

  7. Angine De Poitrine are definitely going to be in the next book.

  8. Too many albums that are sound alikes... Do we need so many US samba albums? Give me the best Brazilian one

  9. I'm already assuming I'm going to prefer the list generated by users.

  10. Really the list is about 250 albums you should hear before you die.

If you're interested my first album was Hotel California by the Eagles (3/5) and my last was Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz (2/5).

If you're interested here's my summary.

Albums added to the book

Does anybody have a list of albums that were added to books for each edition? I'm finding the list of albums taken out easy enough but not the other way. Seems odd that there wouldn't be one.

213: The Velvet Underground & Nico (plus swipe for today’s (Un)Related quiz)

It’s not a roll, but the generator is being very good to me atm. VU&N was probably within the first 30 albums I ever owned and it’s one of very few I have more than one copy of (I finally gave in when I saw this beautiful reissue bargain having put up with my non-gatefold super thin copy all those years)

(Un)Related is a record seemingly unrelated to the 1001 AotD but linked somehow. Today’s Rockbird by Debbie Harry could probably be linked to VU&N in many ways but I’m just looking for the most glaringly obvious one. Answer in comments.
