Stellaris 16 Gen 7 AMD - Quick update after 8 months of use
Hello! It's been exactly 8 months to the day since I shared my initial review of this laptop. I already did an update after 3 months, so this post only mentions stuff from this year. Happy reading!
- 2026-01-xx - Successfully played World of Warcraft. I added the Battle.net installer to Steam as a "non-Steam game". I only got a black screen at first for the launcher, but when I changed the compatibility mode to Proton 10, everything went surprisingly smoothly.
- However, I got some "jittery" frames. It was like jumping between previous and future frames. Disabling vsync fixed that.
- The game often (but not always) would start in window mode, despite normally playing in fullscreen. I had to go to the options and toggle between "PnP" and "Primary" monitors, which seem to be the same thing, as I only use one.
- 2026-01-xx - Using Puddletag to tag my local music collection. The Flatpak versions seems to be unable to access my second drive. I need to copy the files to my home folder to edit them, and then move them back.
- 2026-01-xx - I sometimes use my old laptop still for Windows things, and I noticed that this Tuxedo machine makes no sound whatsoever. I don't think the fans ever turned on in my daily use so far.
- 2026-02-17 - Did a system update after boot. Steam didn't open. Clicking restart or shutdown in the start menu simply faded the screen to black. I ran `shutdown now` from the terminal. The next reboot worked just fine, Steam also worked again.
- 2026-02-26 - Booted the laptop as usual. Cursor was visible, but screen remained black otherwise. Shut down the laptop by holding the power button and booting again solved it. It happened about 3 times before, I think.
- 2026-02-28 - The past two days I got a message that Tomte couldn't update something. Upon checking updates via Discover, I got the following error messages:
E: Splitting of clearsigned file /var/lib/apt/lists/deb.tuxedocomputers.com\_ubuntu\_dists\_noble\_InRelease failed as it doesn't contain all expected partsE: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.- Solution was to delete/rename the
/var/lib/apt/listsfolder and runningsudo apt-get updateto fetch the lists anew. I could then update through Discover just fine.
- 2026-03-16 - Maybe I'm just imagining things, but I feel like WoW runs much smoother now.
- 2026-03-20 - Boot was black again with visible cursor
- 2026-04-02 - Playing "Diplomacy is not an Option", the fans are actually turning on, and at full speed no less! Using the "Cool and breezy" preset. I created a custom profile in the Tuxedo Control Center to limit the CPU to 35W.
- 2026-04-27 - On the last map, I would have to set CPU to the max wattage of 165W to have smooth 60 FPS. With 35W it can still run at 40FPS minimum though. I wonder why such a big power difference causes so little performance gain. Perhaps it's just a Proton compatibility layer thing.
- 2026-04-26 - Started playing Trackmania again, by installing Ubisoft Connect through Steam, the same way I installed Battle.net before. It worked perfectly fine.
- Playing with a PS4 controller, I had to disable Steam Input so it won't get recognized twice and jumble up my inputs.
- There was noticeable input delay. Fix was to disable vsync.
- 2026-04-30 - Rarely, the laptop would randomly turn on the fans full speed for just a split second. Not sure what this is about. It happens about once every hour or two.
- 2026-05-11 - I tried fiddling a bunch with the fan settings, but no matter what I do, the short "bursts" keep happening. No matter if the fan profile is "Silent" or "Freezy". The latter does keep them on at all times, but still goes for the split-second speedup at around the same interval. Temperatures are hovering around 40°C dGPU/45°C CPU with the Freezy profile, and 50°C dGPU/55°C CPU with the Silent one. It also "boosts" even when the fans are already on while doing some demanding task.
- I tried downgrading the Tuxedo Control Center to 2.1.23-16, but it didn't change anything.
- 2026-05-10 - I noticed that my phone charges incredibly slowly all of a sudden from the laptop. Like, 2% per hour. I restarted the phone and that seems to have fixed it. Mentioning it here because it somehow only affected charging from the laptop. Charging from my power bank worked just fine.
- Status on some of my previous notes:
- Bluetooth mouse still disconnects 20 seconds after boot
- Still can't charge USB devices when the laptop is turned off
- Steam started all glitchy sometimes → Didn't happen anymore
- Laptop didn't charge sometimes → Didn't happen anymore
