Advice/feedback for someone new-ish to the Hyatt program

Hi all,

I’ve had the World of Hyatt Visa for two years but have only traveled a bit vacation wise in the last few years, I had acquired a decent amount of points (about 110,000), and I’ve earned four free award nights.

First year’s award night, just used at the Hyatt Regency Resorts World JFK (needed it for a work stay), and I’ve stayed at 2 of the JDV properties in Europe because the redemption point rate was quite good for those.

Finally trying to get back into traveling more now, had 3 free nights (two expiring soon I wanted to use in particular), so took a trip to Australia.

Used two of my free nights at Hyatt Regency Sydney, and one free night at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne. Also wanted to try to achieve a brand explorer free night, so stayed at the Caption in Sydney as well, and also Standard X in Melbourne, as I knew those brands would be difficult to check off otherwise with limited locations, so that made five brands and earned an additional free night (all four hotels were great by the way, trip was amazing).

Now for a question…points free nights and free award free nights are both refundable and return either the free night award or the points value back to your account if you cancel within the timeframe? (I wanted to stay at the Hyatt Regency in Zurich before this trip but the room booked up while I was trying to arrange my flights, next time I’d just go ahead and book in advance and cancel if I can get the free night award/points refunded if need be).

Is there anything else I can/should be doing more to maximize my nights/points earned? Thanks for any insight!
