Journey inside the New K1 Super 8 Camera

A fascinating journey inside the new K1 . It’s a strange combination of computer , movie camera and digital display. The adaptations of digital display is fully integrated much more usefully than Video Assit where the video finder is copied out of an optical system . This is integrated running simultaneously with film . The display in this configuration can be use to accurately frame what is recorded on film while offering the user the ability to see various frame sizes and formats including things like CinemaScope as they relate. Up until now this was all done with reference lines , approximating rather than framing . The digital feed is also integrated with power and on board monitor. Having built may a Video Assit system myself with tiny cameras hanging of the eyepiece and batteries and monitoring cords all over its a joy to simply turn the system on and your ready to shoot . Years ago I stopped offering such systems as the complexity of operating made it so cumbersome that most projects were derailed . Being integrated is a dream come true.

The 8mm film Community

One thing I love about Shooting on film is the community of people. No matter where you are film people recognize each other , talk about their projects and share experiences. I was at Morro rock over the weekend film testing the new Kodak Super 8 camera and happened on this 35mm shoot. Turns out these are customers of mine on another project . It’s a small community with tremendous influence with a great understanding of the need to work together on such complex art form.

The best way to check the optical performance of a Super 8 camera is to put it on a Collimator. This device allows you to see the performance of the camera’s optics. Many cameras have issues with optics based on age with fungus and grease smears or because the camera at some point in its 50 plus year live was Dropped .
