Shoppers Drug Mart- beware of buying gift cards from here

Edit to add,
- This occurred at the Promontory location.
- They are actively deleting my Google reviews, trying to inform shoppers to be careful.

First, I'm posting this to raise awareness and encourage people to be cautious when purchasing gift cards from Shoppers Drug Mart and I’d like to preface this by saying I’m not looking for sympathy or advice. I’ve already contacted the store, Shoppers Drug Mart (SDM) Customer Service, Lululemon, and attempted to file a police report. I currently have an active investigation with SDM Customer Service.

Second, I am aware a gift card could have been purchased from Lulu online or from their store front on Highstreet.

Here’s what happened:

On June 8, 2026, I purchased a $400 Lululemon gift card as a gift. When the recipient tried to use it on lululemon.com, the transaction was declined because the card had a $0 balance.
After contacting Lululemon, they confirmed the gift card was not active and advised me to return to the SDM where it was purchased.

At the store, I spoke with a supervisor named Kathy (or Cathy), who explained that the issue would have to be handled through SDM Customer Service because the store couldn’t resolve it. During that conversation, she also mentioned that this location has experienced issues with Lululemon gift cards for the past several months, yet they are still being sold. That was particularly concerning to hear.

I’ve since opened a case with SDM Customer Service, and it’s currently under investigation. I also contacted the non-emergency police line to create an incident report, but I was advised to wait until the retailer’s investigation is complete before proceeding further.

I’m sharing this simply so others are aware. If you’re buying gift cards, it may be worth checking the packaging carefully and keeping your receipts (original and gc activation receipt). In my case, a $400 gift card was unusable from the moment the recipient tried to redeem it.

Moving forward, I will use my own advice, rather than be a Cotton Headed Ninnymuggins having to experience this ever again.
