Question about Jumping!

Question about Jumping!

Wanted to ask the seasoned iggy owners out there - is jumping at people a behaviour that iggies grow out of?

My 6 month old boy has done a complete 180 - from being terrified and barking at every person he sees to thinking they the best thing since sliced bread. Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud all the hard work, patience and socialising has helped him overcome his fear and I’m glad he’s more confident in himself, but we can’t have him throwing his whole body and parkouring off of people now can we.

I do tell the boy “down” when he jumps at me, and he doesn’t do it any more. Our trainer says he has learned that it’s not ok to do it to mum but everyone else is fair game.

I’m guessing this is something that most iggies go through, so I guess I’m asking do they grow out of it? or is there a better way to train him not to throw himself at strangers.

Crying in the crate

My 5 month old puppy has generally been excellent in his crate however over the past few weeks we’ve seen a bit of regression.

I have a camera on him so I can see when he’s moving, and I used to wake up sometimes and see he’d been awake for 40 minutes or so but not heard a peep. Then a few weeks ago, the whining started - yippee!!

His usual routine would be that he would get up with me (reluctantly) for a toilet break when my partner leaves for work. Once finished he would take himself back to bed for another 40mins-1hour before I get up for work. He would not whine at all in this time.

Now, he still does the same ie. refuses to get up, runs straight back to the crate after, but he sits in the crate and whines, yawning the entire time. If he is let out, he simply runs to the other dog bed we have in the lounge and lays there. I’m reading this as - He doesn’t want to be awake, he wants to sleep, but not in the crate, and my god the persistence. I’ve been waiting this morning for him to just lay down and shut up, but nearly an hour after I took him out he is still going strong. It’s not distressed whining, it’s sad little ”I don’t want to be in here” protests.

Any ideas as to what’s best to do? I would get up earlier but he doesn’t actually want to get up 🤣

Are iggys a lazy breed? Asking for a friend 👀🥲🤣

I’ve had my boy almost 3 months and he turns 5 months old today! 😍🎉

Asking as he seems to have regressed with his sleeping. Here I was thinking I’d scored another couch potato (like my mini dachshund) but this week has proved otherwise !

Hes gone from sleeping through until 7am when he was 2 months, 8-8:30am at 3 months and then 8:30-9am at 4 months. The past week he has consistently been up around 7-7:30am, today waking up at 6:40am.

I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve started taking him on morning walks over the past few weeks (leaving consistently at 8:30am) and he’s just so damn excited that he wakes up early? or what! all I know is I used to wake him up and now it’s the other way around.

He has also started whining in the morning over the past few days as well. He started around 7:15am today and continued up until I came down for our walk at 8:30.

not sure what’s going on with him, teething problems perhaps? Testing behaviour? Who knows

Is barking common in iggy pups?

Hi all!

I have a 4 month old iggy who barks at everyone. When we’re out on walks and he sees a person or dog, when he’s in the garden, when someone comes to the house etc. Wondering if this is something he will grow out of with regular socialisation? Or are iggys prone to being barky?

I told my partner they were not a noisy breed and so far he’s worse than my dachshund 🤣

Would my puppy be able to tell that my other dog was unwell when sleeping in separate rooms?

Bit of a weird one but I just have to ask for opinions as my partner and I are divided.

We have an 8 year old dog and a 14 week old puppy. Currently they sleep in separate rooms in their own crates as the puppy is up early/during the night and our adult dog likes his beauty sleep (the view is to have them sleeping in the same room once the pup is a bit older!). We’ve had the puppy 4 weeks on Sunday and so far, he’s been very good at night. Goes to sleep with no issues, wakes us up for the toilet and then goes back with minimal fuss - sometimes a bit of a whimper but nothing more. He then sleeps through until my partner leaves in the morning at 7am, occasionally getting up to say hello but most of the time just watching from his bed before going back to sleep.

Thursday night was a different story! Our puppy woke at 4am as usual and went out for his toilet break. All done and happy and then back in the crate. As I left him to go back to bed he began howling and barking, barely coming up for air. My partner and I debated on what to do as he has never done this before, should we go back to him, should we leave him etc. After around 15 minutes he stopped for a moment and I went to him, let him out again and he went to the toilet once more. Back in the crate, and then back to howling and barking. By this point our other dog was now also whining.

I went to our other dog to settle him and in the darkness could not see that he had been sick all over his crate and blankets. He continued to be sick and then went outside to take care of some not-so-pleasant business. He’s fine now! Likely a minor upset from something he ate as he’s a mini Dyson.

What is interesting is usually our puppy gets incredibly worked up at the sight of our adult dog, he finds him so exciting and cannot contain himself when he sees him first thing. But last night seeing me take our adult dog out for the toilet actually calmed the puppy down. As soon as he saw me go out with him, he stopped his incessant noise and went back to sleep. When we next saw him at 7am he watched my partner leave without a sound and carried on sleeping til 8:30am as usual.

So I guess here is my theory - I think he KNEW something was up with my adult dog and was alerting me. I’m not sure how he would know from a different room, doors drawn to, but maybe he heard him? I feel like he knew something was up for sure.

Let me know your takes I’m so interested!!

When do iggy pups acquire breaks

my partner and have a 14 week old iggy pup. He is our first iggy and we’ve had him for a month now, he’s wonderful!

I was hoping to get some insight from seasoned iggy owners as to when these lovely creatures learn how to stop when they run? or at least how not to run into everything 🤣

we have a resident 8 year old mini dachshund and our iggy loves to run at him at full speed, sending him flying. I’m certain he’s not doing it purposely, more that he hasn’t mastered stopping or dodging things. He’s also run full pelt into a few closed doors.

Separation anxiety advice please!

Hi all!

my partner and I just became parents to a gorgeous iggy pup 2 weeks ago. He just turned 13 weeks today.

All in all he’s been doing AMAZING so far. He has been sleeping in his crate both during the day and night with no issues. When in the crate I can potter about the house, hoover, go in the garden, leave and walk our other dog etc and he’s totally fine. I have a camera so I watch him and he is chill.

The issue is when he isn’t in there. If I even dare to set foot upstairs he will scream bloody murder. If he’s in the crate he doesn’t care! He watches me leave without a peep. If he isn’t in his crate then it’s the end of the world and I’m never returning.

Just looking for some advice please! Just wondering if it’s because it’s early days and I just need to keep on as we are. Although, I’d like to be able to go up to the loo without having to crate him every time! 🤣 (also we do have another dog so he’s never alone but he cares not for his whereabouts, only mine!)

Thanks!!!
