A little language theory for vowels

I've been spending the last few days going over my notes, and trying to find further information that can be gleaned from the maps to translate the unknown erajan words, and I've come up with a theory based on the following:

raa = very, very (from final exam)

essa = love (blue memo)

jor = name (classroom wall)

joro = father (blue memo)

jora = mother (from tomb letter - deduced meaning based on context and translation for father)

The game is very, very specific about the translation for raa. Because it follows many conventions for prefixes as an adjective, I think that we can deduce that ra = very if raa = very, very.

So, adding an 'a' changes the meaning of the word it's added to. My first thought was that it "exaggerates" the word that it follows, but I think that a cleaner definition is that it acts as a kind of 'operand' and exactly doubles it: raa = ra ra, essa = ess ess, jora = jor jor. In the archives, the news paper states that Kaitlin Je Ari is named by erajan tradition, and given her mothers surnames. This implies that erajans typically inherit two names from their mothers, so 'a' acting as an operand in jora to 'jor, 'jor' makes sense - your two surnames names come from your mother in this culture (mother = two names).

If this applies to essa: essa = ess, ess -> ess = 'heart' or something similar.

It follows that other vowels or vowels in general may have special rules when used on their own as affixes. I would hazard a guess that 'o' in joro may perform some other operation on the prior word, but I haven't been able to deduce what it might be (it could be added to distinguish from both jor and jora: jor/o - not your name, but related to it).

I think that we can deduce at least one more vowel operand: i (this one is more speculative, though).

At the north pole of the map, the letter 'i' is on its own. Well, what is the north pole? Of course, it is the only reachable portion of the planet's core: its central axis - literally the core of the earth. Both inn and iss begin with 'i': the two cardinal directions that point to the mora's polar axis.

This may sound crazy at first, but perhaps 'i' is also acting as a vowel operand: performing a linguistic 'core' operation the letters that follow? Perhaps when a vowel is followed by two consonants, it performs a specific 'operation' - changing or adding a specific meaning.

The south pole is actually labeled "The southern key", with a figure 8 where the pole would be. Reflecting or rotating an 's' and combining it with the first one creates an 8. iss = 8 in erajan, literally, with the i reflecting the second s and combining it with the first (or performing some other operation)?

TLDR: I think that if a vowel is followed by two consonants, it performs some operation on those consonants, creating a meaningful symbol, and a vowel at the end of a word may perform some other operation on the whole word, and 'i' means core, but it also means the operation of coring...

Lore Speculation: A lesson in Astronomy

Having completed the game, my brain can't stop tracing over the impressions that it has left in my mind. Unanswered questions. A world that is so rich and inviting, but with so few windows to look inside. What follows in this post is just part of the spiral that I've been following as I trace and retrace those steps through the halls of Mt Holly.

Stop here if you haven't completed the game!

A few days ago I made this post, were I explored the Erajan language, using the information that we have to deduce some translations where direct ones are not provided. I was studying the map, looking for any new information that I could use to try and find a definitive translation for 'ej' (He's literally taunting us with this word on the title screen map!!), when I found the most amazing detail yet.

Let's start at the Sinclair family Motto:

"Ovinn Nevarei" - To the north, a new future

Does this make ANY sense?

Why would this be the phrase of choice for the Sinclairs? Why would THIS be the motto for a family that, for nearly a hundred years, has lived on or about Mt. Holly - in the heart of the nation that they want to reclaim?

To the north (ovinn) is Arch Aries, a realm that receives remarkably little attention from the narrative, compared to Orinda/Fenn Aries' neighbor to the south, Eraja. Wouldn't a better phrase be: In THIS place, our future? (Perhaps an Erajan translation for this could be (je/ej?)Aries Nevarei)

The conclusion then, must be that this is somehow metaphorical, so what IS the north to our family tree?

The only "northern" symbol that we see referenced for the Sinclairs is the Inneclipse.

The northern antechamber door, leading to room 46, is marked by the Inneclipse. Baroness Auravei wore a necklace depicting it, marked the true (blue) room 46 door with it, (presumably) added it to the secret garden (when all arrows point north), and it's seen in the inner (INNer?) sanctum above the northern lever. What does the symbol mean, other than a representation of the cardinal direction, that it would be so important to her?

A blue memo tells us that the inneclipse can only be seen in the north, which can explain the name. The symbol we see shows the moons of Mora: The smaller one eclipsing the larger one, which is in the phase of a waxing crescent. If we go to school and draft the 4th grade classroom, we can ferther our knowledge some more. Let's take a close look at the EttSphere map...

In the top right corner of the map, there is a chart that shows Mora and her two moons, under it the words "The Devoted Circle". The larger one is called the Devoted Moon, and the smaller one, that orbits the Devoted moon, rather than Mora is called the Rogue moon. We can deduce that the symbol of the inneclipse is that of The Rogue moon eclipsing the Devoted moon. If we inspect the chart with a magnifying glass, there is a note, barely visible, that reads "The Devoted Orbit is 24 hours". This has several implications for this world. I thought that most of this was just an odd text, or "flavor" for the worldbuilding ...until I realized what it means.

If the Devoted moon's orbit is 24 hours, Mora is tidally locked to it

- One hemisphere would NEVER see the moon, and the other would ALWAYS see the moon

- At certain times of year, you would see a full solar eclipse every day, depending on your latitude, with the most frequent solar eclipses taking place at the equator (where the axial tilt has the least effect on the length of the day, and the relative maximum height of the sun in the sky).

- The phases would pass rapidly through the day, each phase marking the hours and minutes as they pass, like the hands of a clock.

- The near and far side of Mora to the Devoted moon would perpetually be at high tide, perhaps with some variation due to the gravitational pull of the rogue moon as it orbits the devoted moon.

- Depending on the orbital period of the rogue moon, the rogue eclipses would mark times of the hour, day, (month?) or year.

"Months are slightly longer than days" - a note in the drawing room that is a hint to the solution for the safe in that room (That had me very confused when I first read it), may also be a nod to the Devoted Moon's orbital period matching that of the day - perhaps it's off by some fractions of a second, the way our solar day is not (exactly) 24 hours, and is actually 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4.09 seconds.

With that (frankly astounding) information, let's go back to our inneclipse symbol and our maps...

- The Rogue moon is a full circle (Colored red, in the representation we see on Lady Auravei's necklace), and in the center of the image.

- Much like on earth, the moon would appear vertically "flipped" in the southern hemisphere, and appear to rotate as latitude is increased or decreased. In our symbol, the Devoted Moon is in a waxing crescent phase viewed from the north pole (Vertically symmetrical, as demonstrated well by this image from wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_phase#/media/File:Moon_phases_by_latitude.svg)

- The Devoted moon's orbital tilt does not match the axial tilt of Mora (it is not directly over the equator). On Earth, Geosynchronous satellites need to be directly over the equator to ensure that they do not move relative to earth's surface. If their orbit is not equatorial (as is the case for the Devoted moon), they will appear to move - tracing a figure 8 in the sky.

- The rogue moon's orbital tilt does not match that of Mora, or the Devoted Moon. Depending on the eccentricity of this tilt, as it moves across the surface of the devoted moon relative to Mora, this can distort the Rogue moon's apparent path across the sky, and it may appear to "dance across the sky" if it has a backwards or retrograde orbit.

So cool! ... But what does this conjunction of celestial bodies mean to this world? When does it take place? Why is it important for someone living at the equator? (We can see Mt. Holly on the world map just south of the equator - we know that we are a bit north of the mountain)

If I'm correct and the Devoted moon is directly over 0 degrees East, Mt Holly's coordinates on the map are 0 degrees North by 22 degrees East. (Done by counting the longitude lines on the map). (Completely hidden from the western hemisphere). That would mean that the new moon takes place at 10:30. Because this is the equator, days will be approximately 12 hours. The Waxing crescent will take place ~3 hours later... at 1:30, the Sacred Hour.

Coming to this realization: the level of detail and creativity in world building - that just one tiny detail about the orbital period of the moon would make such a big difference - to think that it took me weeks of staring at maps to realize something so core to this world... Hats off to Tonda Ross! That was amazing!

I'm not even done with my analysis and exploration of the astronomy of this world, what the sacred hour means (beyond the celestial event), or how it relates to our family's political ambitions - the rest is going to have to be in another post because I got too excited when I made this realization and I had to share, but there is even more! Have YOU seen all the signs?

Lore Speculation: An exploration through the language

This is a repost because my original title was flagged (incorrectly) for spoilers

Even after finishing everything the game has to offer, I cannot stop thinking about the world and puzzles of this game. I've been assembling all the bits of lore to see what can be determined more concretely from some things that are deliciously vague. Here, I mostly explore the 'Erajan' language. Join me, if you'd like, on a spiral of speculation on the lore and history of the world!

This contains spoilers for end game content and lore. Consider yourself warned!

The blue memo found in the Rumpus room says: "The Real Alzara was an Erajan soothsayer who belonged to the royal court of Aries. He was Banished from the realm in the fifteenth year of Ejera for a prophecy that did not come to pass"

We do not know (for sure) to which court of Aries Alzara belonged: Orindia or Orinda Aries? The court of Aries is a location in game, but this location was likely used by both Orindia and Orinda Aries at various points (Though Orindia DID likely begin with the seat of power in Oris, as that is where Oris was crowned, in a ritual that requires a throne).

Let's dig into the meaning of the word 'Aries' some more...

The Eraja postal stamp, when inspected with a magnifying glass, shows 'EttAries Yenna' and its translation: "The Eastern Reign". A Treasure Room memo tells us that Yenna has the meanings 'Royalty/Reign/Rain'. Ett = East, so if the translation is 'The Eastern Rain', we can disect 'EttAries' further. 'Eastern' = 'Place to the East'/'Of the East'/'From the East'/'Land of the east'. Therefore, I think that the best translation for 'Aries', is "The land" or "This place", making Aries court "The court of the land". Helpful!

We can even break this word down further. sei = sea/ocean; Erajan reverses words to provide inverted meaning: el/le (with/without me), aj/ja(first/last), etc. To follow this: ies/sei = land/sea. It would follow that 'Ar' is a prefix that adds meaning to Aries -> Ar + ies - > ? + land, making potential translations for the prefix 'ar': 'this', 'of the' 'about'

Aries = "(of + [the/this]/of/about/in) land" - doesn't tell us about Alzara, but cool!

The biggest mystery about this memo is the reference to the 'Ejera' (ej + era). Ejera is not used in reference to any other specific time period, so we do not know when the 'Ejera' era takes place, with no true confirmation for the meaning of 'ej' as a prefix. It can be found in use on the 3rd era map, showing 'ejsei' as the labeled body of water between Nuance and Orindia.

Other bodies of water are labeled 'orrsei' (west sea), 'innsei' (north sea), 'ajsei' (first sea), 'seija (last sea)'. Orr and Inn are cardinal directions, so translation is simple enough. The final two may be less simple, though.

The cardinal direction South is correlated to '8', Draxus, death, the unfathomable, and seija surrounds a body of land called 'The South Key'. According to the grade 4 blue memo, there have been three expeditions there, only one returned. They made a cautious survey of the coast and never made landfall. So another translation could be 'The final sea/unfathomable sea/ The 8th sea/ The southern sea'

This also carries to the name chosen for the realm 'Eraja'. A literal translation to 'the last era'. If we take a note from the history textbook, it could also mean 'The current era'/'The present'/'The end of time', but in the context of it's relationship to the south, 8, and Draxus it could mean 'The era of the unfathomable'/'the southern era'/'The end time'/'Time of the south' - This IS the land of mysticism and poetry after all.

aj/ja is not just first/last. It would have cultural, contextual meaning. While 'ajsei' may literally translate to 'first sea', let's extrapolate what else it may mean in this world's cultural context...

The 8 angels are referred to as the 8 'Ajeran' angels. A direct translation is '8 angels of the first era', but let's see if there's a better translation... The ocean surrounding Mora Jai is 'ajsei', and this realm provides us with a some clues. The motto for Mora Jai is "The white seas of Yore". The name for Mora Jai uses the Erajan word 'Mora' (meaning world/earth). We have no translation for Jai (yet), but I think this gives us reason to believe that Mora Jai shared some or all of its language with Eraja ("The mystical realm of the ancestors"). Yore means 'distant past' and "The white seas of yore" is likely a reference or near direct to ajsei itself.

'Ajeran' -> 'The distant past'/ 'The time before'/'Ancient'

Ajsei -> 'old sea/ancient sea/sea of yore'

...So what about Ejsei? I think there are two likely translations. The first is 'inner sea', for reasons already stated, based on geographical location, but let's take this in a more speculative direction. The 'Children of Black Water' is a rebel group in Fenn Aries, working to undermine the red nation and reinstate the black flags of Orindia/Orinda Aries. Ejsei is the largest body of water off of the coast, besides Orrsei to the realm's east. What if 'the black water' is ejsei? ejsei = 'black sea'/'dark sea'.

The implications if this (admittedly speculative) translation:

This memo could be read as "... the fifteenth year of the black era".

ej = black -> ejera = 'black era'

If we accept that:

je = white -> je ari yenna= white ??? reign/rain/royal

The national color for Eraja is purple, but I think that this is more a nod to "Purple Rain" from the dev, who's clearly a fan of puns and probably a fan of Prince ;)

If I speculate further, it would be REALLY easy to swap out ari with 'Swan' -> White Swan (Ashen Swan)

There have been others that speculate that the Poem found in the clocktower is actually one of Alzara's prophecies, if not THE prophecy that got him exiled. (Potential meaning in parentheses)
- To the south, I see a swan,
- Ashen like the sands of the shore, (White swan to the South - Je Ari)
- Carried by westwardly winds, (Aided by Nuance, maybe?)
- Rogue like the moon of the north. (Not loyal to the crown)
- To the east I see a crow, (The seat of power for Orindia is now in the east of the country)
- Dark are the days coming fourth. (Fourth king, fourth era, bad times)

The game tells us that erajan does not have any verbs, but that isn't entirely true. In the letter that we find in Clara's tomb, she writes 'nevdau eldarielu, nevdau uldareile', which translates to "tomorrow I'll be without you, tomorrow you'll be without me" OR "morning(mourning) my future without you, morning(mourning) your future without me". It's a play on words. Clara is mourning the end of her time with her daughter, as she is close to death. If we know anything about the game's creator, it's that he loves a play on words. A more explicit example is the translation for Yenna; Yenna = rain (noun) AND reign (verb, contextually). The implication is that homophones in English may also have homophones in Erajan.

If we follow this logic, the homophones: gate and gait also apply to Erajan: yait = gate AND yait = step

What about ...Key? Well, you have key (opens locked doors) and key (musical group of notes). A musical key usually consists of 8 notes, starting in one octave and ending with the starting note in the next.

With 8 notes in an octave, the first and last note is the sei, see? (Sorry, I meant C ) - Now that's a major key!

I'm sure that there's more world lore that can be gathered from translations of Erajan found in the game. I've been having a lot of fun with it.

Family history leaving me with questions

Today, I re-read the letter from Herbert to Simon found in the >!Tomb!<, and something stuck out to me. He states the following:

">!I chose this dreary dank dungeon to be laid to rest... And that same dim somber fate fell upon my father and his father before him who love the outdoors even more than myself.!<"

Which I found odd, because we can find the estate >!deed!<, which shows that >!it was sold to Lady Aruavei (Herbert's mother). How would Herbert's grandfather be interred there?!<

- >!We know that Mary, through Lady Clara Epsen, is!< (major spoilers here:) >!directly related to the Desiletes line, making Simon (our Simon), the heir to the throne, but that doesn't explain to me how Herbert's grandfather (presumably Baron Edwin Sinclair, from the Foyer), would be buried on the Estate, unless there's some really messed up stuff implied between Clara Epsen and Simon Sinclair - which I do NOT think is the case.!<

Stuck (late game?) and requesting a hint. No full solutions, please!

Warning: A lot of spoilers below - I've tried to separate information sources from solutions to keep it as safe a read as possible.

I think that it's easier to say every thing that I have done and all of the clues that I have first (Not in any particular order):

  1. I have opened all >!8!< >!sanctum doors!<, and solved >!the seal found in!< each one
  2. In room 46, I have solved >!8 realms in 8 months!<, where I found the >!deed and Herbert's final will!<.
    1. From >!the will!<, I used the >!angel's order!< to find >!Mary's first drafts in the tomb!<.
  3. I have purchased all books from the bookshop, and everything from the giftshop (unlocked the blue tents)
  4. From "A New Clue" book hints:
    1. I found >!all 3!< >!microchip keys!< to find >!the throne room black!< print
    2. I found all the >!signs,!< >!then deciphered the hints from the anagrammed book titles!< to unlock >!the satellite dish!<
    3. Figured out the >!blackbridge grotto!< server >!admin key!< .
  5. After lighting all >!4!< >!braziers!< I found the >!chess!< room:
  6. I have unlocked >!the chess powers!< >!knight, king, then rook in that!< room
  7. I found >!the CASTLE!< puzzle, then
    1. I >!performed the castle move!<.
    2. >!In the new location!<, >!I used mora jai box clues!< followed by >!the CASTLE letters grid!< to >!acquire the key!<.
  8. I have >!removed all of the boxes!< from the >!tunnel!<, >!opened the doors there!< EXCEPT for the >!blue holly door!<.
  9. Using hints from >!the blue memos!< and the >!number core information found!< in the >!gear room off of the basement that was sent to Lady Auravei!<, I solved >!the "family core" found in the wine cellar!< to find >!the letter in vault 53!<.
    1. With that information, I solved >!Auravei's Cypher in the letter!<,
    2. added >!'still' water to blank books (in library)!<,
    3. then drafted >!the secret passage in the outer!< room.
    4. There, I found >!another blue holly door that I cannot!< open.
  10. I have unlocked all >!8!< >!safes!<, and found all >!7!< >!red letters!<.
  11. In the freezer, >!I found Herbert's letter to Simon!<.
  12. I've completed the room directory and found most of the blue memos. I'm currently missing memos for: The storeroom, the garage, the study, the chamber of mirrors, the gallery and the mail room - I don't think that these will matter?
  13. I have the >!spiral of stars!< constellation (>!though only a few words added!<)
  14. I've >!translated the letter!< to >!Mary!< in >!Lady Epsen's Tomb!<.
  15. After drafting all of the >!classrooms!<, I have >!aced the final exam!<.

Where I'm stuck (only read spoilers below if nothing above was new to you):

I have no idea how to open >!the blue holly doors!<.

After reading >!Lady Auravei's!< messages in >!the blank books!<, >!is there something else I can do with the information before opening the blue holly doors!<? >!'TENDED ROSE VINE' makes me think that this is an anagram (unfortunatly, I'm quite bad at them), and the picture is reminiscent of spiral of stars. Her reference to 'journeys conclusion' makes me think that this might have something to do with the tomb, as well. My first guess was that I need to order the angels to match the planets from the spiral of stars map found in the classroom, but only two of the angels share names with planets, and I haven't found other angel-planet connections!<.

From the poem '>!A New Hue'!<, >!I've concluded that the 3 colors summing to 18 are violet, Yellow and Orange. I think it might be referencing the prism key, but not sure (tried using it in the Aquarium and the passage, but nothing came of it).!<I think that >!the grid is a reference to the castle room!<? (technically, I guess it's possible to make it this far without having found it)

From Herbert's letter >!found in!< >!the freezer!<: >!I think there is a puzzle here? He states at the end: "To each their own letters". From this, my guess is!<: >!Each numbered letter is associated with the sender (which is why we don't need letter 3 - we know it's from Denny Revane). After solving the Wine cellar puzzle, my guess is that each name resolves to roman numerals (all of them except letter 6 start with a numeral). However, if this is part of the solution, I have no idea where to use it. I've tried adding them and resolving them to clock times, but not all of the names convert well for this!<.

- I don't know where to use >!The black key!<. >!I've tried to use it around the estate, but it's never been an option on any locked door (including in the throne room)!<.

Are my guesses in the right direction? Any hints on where I should be looking - something I can re-read with a different context or a room I should re-visit? Once again, no full solutions, please!

Does anyone know where I can find Nancy Drew game location screenshots for backgrounds?

I work remotely, and my team was recently told that we all need to turn on our camaras for meetings (We've all been remote for years, but got a new manager...).
I share an office with my husband, and I need to use a background filter for his privacy. Anyway, custom backgrounds are allowed, and I think it would be really fun to use Nancy Drew screenshots as backgrounds during the meetings. Does anyone know if there's a good location where I can find the screenshots (like what the streamers use) without playing through the games and capturing them myself?
