Hating retainers

I just got the hawley retainers today and I'm hating the feeling of my tongue resting on the acrylic. I've had braces for a long time, talk about 6 years because of the pandemic and some financial issues, along with the clinic being really far from my home. I'm not sure if my teeth problem is really that severe, but my dentist said I had to wear retainers for 6 years 24/7 then I can switch to only wearing them at nighttime. Right now that seems absolutely hellish. I heard other people only needed to wear them 24/7 for 6 months, why do I have to wear it for 6 years??
