I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I just saw MK2, and it was fun. There is a running gag in the movie in which Johnny Cage references The Lord of the Rings. Like MANY times. It kinda pulled me out a bit, but my head canon put it together that in the movie, all of JC's movies were produced by New Line. Being a '90s star, a la Tom Cruise, he probably would have at least been considered for the role of Aragorn when the movies were made, and he keeps kicking himself for not getting it.
