My thought on GM spenders

I never think bad of whales as you may call them. Hate them as you may but they keep the game and servers running. So as a F2P player, Im have a bit of gratitude towards them. Maybe it's because I have not met someone who spends heavily, but if I do I would just accept that well, you get you what you get and move on if i am overwhelmed. So stop being salty, stfu or pay up

I'm back after 3 years

Well, stopped playing in 2023 when life got busy but next month I got a few weeks free and suddenly remember this old fond game. I quitted a little after heroes were introduced, lucky me because I got a few heroes level 3-4 already. Can you someone refresh my knowledge of the game? Explain me the mechanics again, any new things in the game (like trenches I heard?) or heroes? Any major updates between 2023-2026? And if you can, please drop me some links to posts that write about the game's whole mechanics. Explain to me like an expert, remember im not a novice so feel free to use any jargon in the game

This game seems like it is made by CS, why it is not published under CoG?

I thought CS is a license too?

How does IF change you?

Life gets fairly busy, I only get so much time for IF nowsaday and when I do have some free time. other things spring up. So little can I read and the number of titles I can count on my fingers but everything I do pick up a book, it is always a blast, if not a blast, well... at least I can certainly find another that blasts. The thing is IF seriously change me in some way. Times whne I feel so down, life gets depressing, boring but reading a IF, going through a wonderful and unforgettable journey with lovable characters, engrossing myself in a fictional world just takes all the stress away. And I feel invigorated again. One of my life mission is now to support authors I love, with part of the money I make. So, life doesn't seem so bleak anymore right?

So, did IF change you? Which book? and in what way?

Kitsune: So quaint, so beautiful

Before deciding to give this book a try, I was hesitant.

My first interactive fiction was The Great Tournament, and I absolutely loved it. I think I first read it back in 2020 or 2021, though I don't remember exactly. It was around the time I first got into IFs, a genre I ended up falling in love with. I've tried a handful of other IFs since then, not many, honestly, probably few enough to count on my fingers. Life gets busy, even as a student, and time just flew by.

Then, in 2026, I started reading IFs again. I got completely engrossed in Hero or Villain and wanted to explore more stories. That eventually led me here: Kitsune.

The thing is, I've always thought IFs should be fun, exciting, and adventurous, almost like a D&D campaign. That's the kind of experience I usually look for, and it's what many of the titles I've read have delivered. From the reviews, though, I heard that Kitsune was much more depressing and emotionally heavy, so I wasn't sure if it would be for me.

But I decided to try it anyway.

First of all, the writing is hilarious. I genuinely couldn't stop laughing, especially during the first few chapters. The author clearly knows a lot about pop culture and slips in jokes at just the right moments. They also have a strong grasp of Japanese folklore, which adds a lot to the atmosphere. All of it comes together beautifully.

More importantly, I felt genuinely connected to Meera and Kit (the name I gave the fox). The characters felt real. The writing brought them to life in a way that made me care about them almost immediately. I think the author's writing style is excellent.

What surprised me most was how many emotions this story made me feel in such a short amount of time.

At first, everything felt fairly normal and mundane. Then the story escalated quickly. The opening chapters gave me a sense of wonder and excitement, almost a magical feeling. But as the story progressed, that feeling slowly gave way to sadness, cynicism, confusion and uncertainty.

I loved my fox. I loved her personality, her quirks, and the way she treated me. Then I learned she had deceived me.

At that point, I honestly didn't know how to feel.

I still cared about her, but part of me desperately wanted everything to be a misunderstanding. I wanted her to finally tell me the truth. Yet again and again, through every twist and revelation, another betrayal would surface.

It's just a game, so I can stay calm about it. But it made me wonder: if something like this happened to me in real life, even without any magical elements, would I really be able to stay that calm? Or would I lash out? Would it leave me with trust issues for years?

In the end, I chose to reunite with the fox.

But it wasn't because I completely trusted her. At the same time, I didn't hate her either. I didn't even fully distrust her. What I felt was much stranger than that.

Part of me wanted to be with her. Another part of me kept screaming that she had hurt me.

By the end, I felt deeply conflicted. I don't know whether I made the right choice. I don't even know whether there was a right choice. All I know is that I made one.

When I finished the story, it left a strange metallic taste in my mouth.

Not a bad feeling, just a strange one.

It felt like something inside me was changing, forming, taking shape, but I couldn't quite grasp what it was. After finishing the story, I sat there in a daze. The feelings of emptiness, possibility, uncertainty, and neutrality lingered long after I closed the book.

Even an hour later, those feelings were still haunting me.

I don't know if Kitsune changed the way I look at life. I don't know exactly what it did to me. But I genuinely feel like something inside me shifted after reading it.

So I want to ask: what is your opinion of Kitsune?

How did you feel after reading it?

And what do you think the story is ultimately trying to say?

How do u deal with interruption?

Ok so when I read a great series, I would immediately read the whole series in one go. But most of the time only the first or if I am lucky, the second book is completed. And most of the time, we have to wait several years for a new sequel to come out. In that time, I think a lot of us would go on to read other titles. So when we finally be able to get our hands on the sequel, we already forgot the plot and character. I think this is the situation of most series on HG/CoG right now. What do you think about this situation? Do you do anything to prevent this? Like waiting for the whole series to come out? And some wips don't even get completed? Do you avoid reading wips for fear of eternal hiatus?

Quick question, can twine-based game (or other engines that are not CS) be published on CoG/HG?

I think not because of compatibility but I'm not so sure myself?

What do you recommend?

I really like books that focus on customization. But more important than customization is the impact of choices and stats. Like I want stats to be really matter, not just for display. And it will be great if you can make out a strategy from the stats. One example is Hero or Villain series. I really feel like levelling up in the game because the outcomes depends heavily on the stats and you can choose a lot of power combination. Please give me similar titles

How long does it take to write a book?

Ok so I know that CoG started in 2009, so now it is 2026 which is 17 years since operations, HG is earlier. I also do some research and google told me that HG has around 250+ titles. So I reckon CoG has about the same number. Is this number kinda low? Or am I vastly underrestimating the time and effort it takes to write a good book? Then what is the average time it takes to publish a book? On average, how many titles do CoG and HG publish each year? One more thing, why do they need a dedicated sector HC (Heart's choice) for romance? Why not just put everything from HC into CoG?

How do u discern AI wips?

I heard some people say that there are recently a lot of wips written by ai, attached with a patreon? How do u even know if a wip is by an AI, given that ai capabilities have improved greatly and writing like a human is no biggie

Why I love Hero or Villain series, and should you?

Well I played the first book thrice or maybe 4 times already, everytime time the story surprises me with new lores and endings. Who could have thought there's >!a vampire clan and you can be one!<, right?

The ending can branch into many paths, somewhat thanks to the rich lore and incredible world-building (blending fiction with real life elements). That's definitely what im looking for in a IF.

Plus there's a whole set of customizable powers. Tho some are def more OP than others, and some will get you nowhere in the game. The best build i've managed to come up with is >!a high Psych + superspeed + a decent superstrength!<, never dissapoint me. A bonus is that >!you become a vampire!<

Tho as some has pointed out, a fight can be a repetitive even with different powers. And, the characters in the story does not have enough depth. But you know, Adrao (the author) must have strived for a balance here as you can't have everything integrated in one go. You cannot have every fight being unique and unpredictable, you cannot have a dive into a relationship with your colleagues or your fellow teammate (may it be a hero or villain) without exponetially skyrocket the wordcounts and the workload. Besides, the bland characters may happen for a reason, as a supervillain once said:
THESE PEOPLE ARE BENEATH ME!

But hey, we should appreciate Adrao's effort to continuously upgrade the game, which adds a lot to the lore and a lot more dialogue (prob as an attempt to make the character a bit more 3d?). Indeed there are still bugs/ grammatical errors/ downsides to the game, not many authors look back on their previous work and make consistent updates, that's why Adrao is now my fav author and I will continue to support him from now on!!!

im excited to see the birth of the fourth book in HOV series!!! During that time, I will work as hard as i can to also fincially support this project. Before reading HOV, I really feel bored with life, not knowing to do, and without any cause to espouse. But now im filled with sense of purpose, one I now deemed sacred amongst other meaningful intents: I would like to continue providing value to society by working, and in turn use part of that money to back adorable creators!!!

Adrao, if you read this, please know that you have a true fan here

I'm conflicted

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I'm curious of your opinions. I want to support the author and buy his games both to read and to support his work. But I heard that COG takes 75% royalty cut. Would buying the game support him as much as donating through patreon? My main concern here is that the royalty cut seems a bit too high and disproportionate. Thế author seems to get so little. Is it the case tho? Or there are data I'm missing, maybe CoG's operation justifies that margin?

Save button not available

I just finished HOV Battle Royale, there's certainly will be part 3, possibly 4. But there's currently no save button for progress at the end of book 2. I wonder will I be able to continue my progress when book 3 released?

Where can I follow my fav writer's progress and updates?

It's a shame that I have been reading IF for around 5 years but only know Reddit as the only forum, I heard that there are places to get updates directly from authors but have not find it myself. One more thing, do authors usually have a donation site like patreon?
