AITAH for telling my coworker I won't cover her shift after she covered mine last month because she forgot her "favor currency" math?
Last month, I needed a shift covered for a family emergency. My coworker "Rachel" agreed to cover me. I thanked her and said I'd return the favor.
This week, she asked me to cover her shift. I said yes—until she told me it's a 12-hour overnight double, and she also wants me to cover her next two shifts after that "to make it even."
I said hold on. I owe you ONE shift. That was a standard 8-hour day shift. You're asking me to work three shifts—one overnight double and two days—total of 28 hours. That's not returning a favor. That's indentured servitude.
She said "time is time, and you owe me" and that I was "nickel-and-diming" favors. I told her I'll cover the 12-hour overnight but that's it. She called me "petty" and said she'll "never help me again."
Now our other coworkers are split. Some say I should just do it to "keep the peace." Others say she's clearly trying to exploit the situation.
I get that she helped me. I'm grateful. But I'm not working 28 extra hours for a favor that was 8 hours. AITAH?
