Have you ever dealt a Shark?

Hi all!

Been in banking for two years now and preform pretty well every month (80+ percentile across the company). However, there is one banker at the branch who is nastiest shark alive… he goes after everyone with every product relentlessly. 80 year old woman who can’t log into her OLB? She will walk out with a two extra savings accounts and an auto loan. High school student who just turned 18? Let’s get him his first credit card and lock what little savings he has into a CD…

I have studying how he does it too… instead of being explicit im what he is saying, he uses vague terminology. For example… “Let me fix this for you” really means we are going to upgrade you to a different account and I won’t tell you about the qualifications. Or, “give me a second to do make this right” means we are going to open a second account so you can have multiple ways to save. A few times, people have called him out and it’s hilarious. They will say “wait… we NEED to do this or you are asking me?”however 9/10 times his tricks work and he gets what he wants….

Have you guys ever seen such “sharky” behavior in your branches before?? I just can’t watch this anymore and the daily gloating is really getting to me.

Did I overpay?

Hi all!

Today I locked myself out of my apartment and had to call a locksmith. It was just the bottom lock (deadbolt was unlocked). A locksmith showed up 30 minutes later and said it would be $275 + tax because the type of lock I have is “too narrow and is a special kind” and blah blah blah. That part I know was just BS. Anyway, he then takes out two air wedges and pops open the door… literally took him 30 seconds… ended up being $304 with tax… I know it was after hours since it was a weekend but did I overpay?

How do I get my deposit growth up?

Hi all!

Been in banking nearly two years and almost always hit my new money goal each month. However, this month I am not even close to hitting my goal… I have only about 10% of my goal so far and the month ends this Friday. Here’s the thing though… the bank I work for just went through a huge merger this year and we ended all of our promotion offers! New money CD rates, direct deposit bonus, new account bonus, and even our refer a friend campaign… all gone… How am I suppose to bring in new money when our rates are in the gutter and all of the incentives for new customers are all taken away??

Do you guys use a “Value” or “Agenda” Statement?

Hi all!

At my bank, we are trained to give a value statement that outlines are agenda before we begin an interaction. My bank does not have tellers so we are all Universal Bankers and do everything from cash transactions to opening new accounts and investments referrals. My managers want us to give an opening statement at the beginning of the interaction and it sounds like this usually.. “Hi Mr.Customer! My name is Billy and I am going to be your banker today. I would be glad to help you with your transaction but before I do, I want to ask you some questions on how you like to do your banking.”

This is supposed to prep the customers for what is about to come (you’re about to get asked a sh*t load of questions about credit card usage, outside balances, auto loans, etc.). Then we make recommendations at the end.

The problem with this is that not everyone wants to engage! Some people just want a roll of quarters or a simple withdrawal! People don’t want to hear your whole spiel just to get a cashiers check…

How do I appease my managers (by saying this) and still have good days for production?

Why is outbound calling so ineffective and why do we continue to do it?

Hi all!

Been in banking nearly two years now, working at a pretty slow branch. One thing that I can’t wrap my head around is why do we make these useless calls?? The managers want us to call 20-30 per day and they are so ineffective… first, almost nobody answers the phones. Second, people get upset and say they don’t have time to talk… Why do we continue to do this? It’s like banging your head against a wall. There has to be a better way of stirring up business.

How many customers/members still come in for cash and what is the reason they need cash?

Hi all!

Been in banking for almost two years now. I see a lot of posts here about annoying customers/members coming in the branch and wanting to get new bills, cash checks, or make large deposits. This almost never happens at my branch (thank god). For one. I work in a very slow branch in an affluent neighborhood and 90% of people use credit cards for purchases. The other 10% use a debit card. No one pays with cash. The only time we ever really do cash is when someone is making home renovations and the contractor wants like $10,000 in cash (this happens like 3-5 times per month). So, what is the main reason people want cash at your branch?

Does it ever feel like there is no room for other opinions in your branch?

Hi all!

I have been in banking for nearly 2 years now (I work as a relationship banker). So many times during the week we are asked questions like “why do we not have enough credit cards??” Or “How come we are lacking in new checking accounts??” When we respond with “well, it’s been slow in the branch” or “nobody has answered the phones when we make calls” its always met with hostility and we get shut down immediately as if we are making excuses… why did you ask me a question if you don’t want to hear my answer??? Does anybody also feel like there is no room for others opinions in their branch?

What is your strategy to get your manager off your back about sales?

Hi all!

Senior banker here who has been in banking about 2 years now. I have two coworkers who are also bankers. One of them ALWAYS likes to argue about his performance (how he shouldn’t have to sell XYZ or how nobody wants ABC product)… That never seems to workout for him lol. The other employee, just smiles and nods when he gets a “talking to” about his sales. I am somewhere in the middle. I try my best and put my best foot forward but also question things at times. My coworker who just smiles and nods came to me once and said “look, if you smile and say “ok will do” then they will eventually forget about it as something new and shiny comes will come along they will focus on.” So, I tried it and it actually worked! Last week my boss said on Monday “I want you to get 3 credit cards per day and I will check in with you on Friday to see how you did.” I said “sure thing! 😊 I’ll get right on that!”…. He totally forgot to check in on Friday and now he is asking for auto loans lol. What is your strategy to get a sales-focused manager off your back?

Why can’t Reverend Alden get married? Am I missing something?

I am not really a religious person, but I have a lot of family who are. Growing up, I have know many pastors who have wives so I always assumed marriage was permitted for leaders of the church. Why is Mrs. Olson making such a big deal about it?

I don’t understand the ending…

Ok, I am watching the very last episode where they all blow up Walnut Grove to prevent the new landowner from being able to profit off the businesses they started. They basically say “you own the land, but you don’t own the building! 💥” then, when the landowner comes to take over the town, he demands the army arrests the citizens because they destroyed his town… the townspeople from the OTHER towns then declare “if you plan on taking over ours towns, this is what you’re going to get too!” This makes the landowner rethink his whole plans now and Reverend Alden cheers that the town did not die in vain… but… wouldn’t it have been a good idea to threaten the landowner with blowing up the town, ya know… BEFORE you actually do it??…. Make this make sense haha

I got promoted today and have mixed feelings about it…

Hi all!

Been a banker for almost two years now. I am not a “sales oriented” person at heart put can easily morph into one when I’m at work. The way I see it, my job is to sell for the bank, so I do my job. Period. Anyways, since our calls are all recorded, higher up managers can listen to them at any time. Last week, one of my calls were pulled for quality assurance and my district manager liked it so much the bank actually made it “one of the official training calls for new hires”… I was flattered they thought it was one of the best but I do pretend that the CEO is listening to my calls whenever I make them so I can see why they liked it lol. Today, the news came that they wanted to promote me to a level 3 banker (the highest level for the role). This came with a nice increase in pay but when I checked what my goals will be, it was DOUBLE in every category… DOUBLE!… I normally do about 125-150% of my goal each month but not double!… not sure how I feel now about the promotion now…any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
