I always thought that the game chooses the best location/tile for the first city but I guess I might be wrong.

Also even if I go around the mountains through galleys it'd still be pointless because I'm going to be semi isolated with only one civ nearby who already has an immense advantage by having an entire continent free for himself while I stay locked in my small peninsula until I get a galley and by the time I get one he would probably be already having three or even four cities.
