Looking for career advice for a new apprentice
I'm trying to switch into carpentry as an apprentice. I don't know much about the industry, but I think it's something I might enjoy. I just got my first job offer from an employer. They told me the hours are 10 hour days M-F, and 8 hour Saturdays. I'd be home every night, but basically I'd eat dinner and go to bed. (I understand many jobs you spend time working in different states) I'm conflicted because this takes a huge amount of time away from me and my family. It will also increase my income and get me into a union apprenticeship program.
My questions:
(1) Are these hours typical for this industry?
(2) Should I hold off for something with more appealing hours?
(3) Is it worth taking this job and busting my ass now, getting trained, and potentially opening up possibilities for more appealing options once I'm trained?
Obviously I am a family man and time with my wife and kids is important to me, but I also understand being a provider is important. I'd like to hear from both experienced workers in the industry and people who understand my priorities.
