Need Help Identifying Animal and Bird

I live in Lower Saucon Township and have seen a lot of wildlife over the years. The sightings seem to be increasing with the ever-decreasing natural habit on the mountain.

I earlier posted a pic of a fawn curled up in our backyard and wasn't sure if Mom was dead or just out foraging. It had been left alone for about 6 hours, but the mother came back and all ended well. I'm sure these two are part of the same troop that use our yard early in the morning as a path to the creek.

Along with the frequent sightings of deer, I have seen coyotes, foxes, wild turkeys, turkey vultures, hawks and snakes, mostly Garters. However, recently I have come across some animals I can't truly identify and need the community's help.

The first is what appears to be a small (baby?) coyote. I've seen foxes and they've been smaller with bright orange coats. And about three years ago I saw a completely (head to tail) hairless fox/coyote that looked like Dobby from Harry Potter. I kid you not. I was making a turn onto Black River Road and it slowly walked in front of my car and then stopped to look at me as I slowly passed. It was so strange.

Another animal that's perplexed me was spotted about three months ago. While I couldn't get a picture in time, it was definitely a canine. It's coat was a solid color and appeared greyish/brown. It was about as big as a Great Dane. Now, this was no dog...this was a lone animal heading toward the woods rimming Black River Creek. Something strange is out there.

The following pix are of the bird, followed by the canine. My camera sucked from the distance I had to shoot, so the the resolution ain't too good after cropping.

I look forward to finding what animals have been part of my neighborhood.

Adventures with wildlife in the Lehigh Valley

I live in Lower Saucon Township, and when I woke up this morning I saw a brown ball lying in our backyard. As I got closer I saw that it was a fawn.

From a distance, I could see that it was motionless. So I'm wondering if it's dead, frightened or an orphan. Now, our yard serves as a deer highway as they make their way from the top of the mountain to Black River Creek so it's not unusual to see deer. However, a lone fawn just lying motionless was never anything I encountered before.

So now I'm worried that this poor little guy is in trouble. I find out what's available online to see if the fawn could be transported somewhere. Pocono Wildlife's voicemail indicated that animals needed to be dropped off at their Stroudsburg location, while the more local option texted that they will not take deer.

So not it's midmorning and as I'm driving to run some errands, I see a dead deer on the roadside as soon as I turn onto 378. So now I'm thinking the little guy may be an orphan. Later, I stop by LSTPD, and speak with an officer to inform them of the fawn and find out all my options. He said to wait until the next day, and then call and we'll reassess what to do. He said that even if the mother was killed, another nursing doe would take it as her own.

When I get back around 1:30, the fawn has changed position and now has its head raised. I go inside and wonder if it's going to make it through the night. I've seen foxes and coyotes run through the yard as well so it's definitely an easy meal.

But then I spot a doe easing her way up to our yard. She doesn't come straight toward the fawn, but circles around through our neighbor's yard, eventually standing about 20 yards in front of it. In my mind, I was expecting the fawn to sprint toward it, but it was all very deliberate and cautious.

And then a bit of suckling, and the two were on their way. A Happy ending.

With the upcoming Democratic primary for the 7th Congressional District, I'm still not sure which candidate to vote for. However, I know one thing. I'm NOT voting for Bob Brooks. He has the Fetterman stench!!!!!
