Fretless outside of jazz, funk, etc.

I'm kinda interested in fretless again for quite a while now and one of the first basses on my bucket list for future instruments will definitely be one. The thing is though, online I only ever see fretless basses in the context of jazz, funk, and anything alike that has that sort of "intellectual" vibe to it, while those are genres that I rarely ever listen to on purpose.

Are there any songs in rock, pop, metal, etc. that have fretless bass in them and that are worth mentioning? Or maybe even artists/bands/projects that tend to frequently use them? (not counting solo bassists obviously)

Norse Paganism

I'm looking for non-fiction books about Norse Paganism or fictional stories with it as their main theme in some non-cliché way.

In terms of non-fiction: I'm neither a believer myself nor am I looking for anything focussing too much on the spiritual side of it all. I'm also not looking for anything focussing too much on the gruesome and dark cliché of it, or anything focussing solely on the norse gods.

In terms of fiction: Mostly as I mentioned above, but things can definitely be a bit more "otherworldly". It can be high or low fantasy or anything in between, just maybe not stories focusing too much on typical things like Valhalla, the afterlife, Helheim, and so on, if that is possible.

The point of what I'm trying to say here is, I'm interested in reading more about norse paganism, but almost every time I see things with or about this topic it's either the gods and the afterlife as a main topic, or gruesome stories about viking or germanic warriors, while this type of mythology has so much more to offer.

Historical events that don't get talked about much, or documentations about life in the past

I just thought I could try reading books about history, as that "genre" keeps being interesting to me. I'm looking for something that doesn't just focus on the obviously big happenings in the past (e.g. war, dictatorships, and such).

So many things happened in the past, no matter the century, but sadly most things I've learned about in school or via TV are things like ww 1 and 2, the French revolution, or things about the dictatorships back then, the depression, stupid things done by stupid monarchs or nobles, and so on.

Don't get me wrong, nothing in history is not worth mentioning and nothing should be forgotten, but it troubles me that I never really learned about anything else so far.

Fantasy that isn't completely cliché

Looking for some fantasy stories, doesn't matter if it's some D'n'D/LOTR-ish worldbuilding or anything else.

I'm interested in something that maybe has a big world in it (not a necessary criterion).

What's important to me though is a sort of story that isn't that much cliché (e.g. cliché fantasy races, a "chosen one" type of main character, a big evil "thingy" or person as the antagonist, RPG-like character roles, etc.)

It can also be somewhat futuristic or so, but doesn't need to be. It can be filled with action, but can also be cozy and slice-of-life. It can have mysterious otherworldly things that the creator makes you theorize about (like the dwarven ruins in skyrim) but can also be of the magical realism.

I honestly hope my description of what I'm looking for makes any sense to you haha.

Why do my mornings differ so much depending on where I spend the nights?

So, I live with my parents atm. I go to a vocational school 5 days a week and normally need to get up early because my train leaves at around 6:30am. Normally I get around 6-7 hours of sleep (depending on how long I stay on the phone.....). My room is in the attic of the house.

So: For a few months now, whenever I sleep upstairs, I wake up really badly and tend to fall alseep again multiple times, and most times I leave the house in some sort of rush. Today, I slept in the living room downstairs because of a few reasons, for almost the same amount of time, and woke up energized and did all my morning preparations with ease. This has been the case multiple times now.

So what's the science behind all this? Why do I get up better and seem well-rested when clearly sleeping on the living room sofa isn't nearly as comfortable as sleeping in my bed?

How to get away from the "digital realm" in my phone without having to spend money

I'm looking for a way to get out of my digital loop. I've already uninstalled every social media except for reddit and have unfollowed youtube channels and subreddits that aren't quite helpful to my mind (e.g. meme subreddits, gaming channels, brainrot and most content creators except for a few very humble ones like that German guy Gronkh (youtube legend over here)).

It's quite hard to do anything in my free time that doesn't have to do with my phone because I'm in a scholastic training without remuneration and only get money from my parents (I'm a 26yo still living with my parents fyi), and I get home with almost no energy left to do much because of all the stuff I'm learning during class.

Do any of you know what non-digital things I can do in my free time? Fyi I try reading books every now and then whenever I actually have moneys left to buy some, and have thought about maybe getting into jigsaw puzzles. I also like making and listening to music (main hobby), although I've had a creative block for almost a decade now it seems, and as of right now it seems like not many of my prior bands have gotten anywhere.

Last but not least I sometimes try to just chill in my parents' garden listening to the trees, birds and things alike, but that little phone addiction still kicks in every so often (like it did prior to this exact moment tbh).

Self improvement, mental health, and living a simple life.

Looking for books containing said topics. Can be active exercises, thought-provoking stories, slice of life, or anything alike, although I'm not necessarily looking for autobiographies.

When I began reading books again about a month ago I started with "The Creative Act: A Way Of Being" by Rick Rubin.

I've now developed a taste for books like this one and want to find more things alike.

Pitch shifting/transposing before or after the rest of the effect chain? (Quad Cortex)

Title says it all I guess.

I play in a classic rock band that tunes down from 1 to 3 half tones below standard in a number of songs to make life easier for our singer, and to make things easier for me I just copy-pasted my QC preset and put a transposer at the end depending on the tuning I want to have.

Now, I've been skimming discussions concerning the position of the pitch shift in signal chains, be it modelers like the QC or physical pedals on a pedalboard.

So, what exactly is "correct" now?

Fidgeting and being easy-to-annoy

Hey there. Thought I might throw this question at y'all.

TL;DR: I'm a very fidgety, constantly stressed and easily annoyed person (probably due to side effects of long-term meds), already going to therapy but looking for alternative ways to manage my constant restlessness.

So, apart from a bunch of other problems I'm trying to deal with atm, there's this "problem" I have that I start fidgeting quite often during the day, no matter the surroundings (e.g. school, friends, family, etc.).

I basically start tapping my fingers in some kind of rhythm going through my head. I guess it's because music is my main hobby and I love drums while not being a drummer myself, but I also think it's because I'm constantly in stress-mode, even if it's just subconsciously. I already started visiting a therapist a few weeks ago, so maybe I'll figure out how to calm down eventually. I have also tried out many different fidgeting toys and gadgets like the spinners, the cubes and other things, but none of them seemed to help me for longer than like maybe 10 minutes max.

Apart from that I also get annoyed by my surroundings, especially people quite easily. It's mainly my classmates (I'm in a scholastic training) because many of them are simply annoying creatures to begin with, but I've been told by friends and family that it seems like I'm generally in an almost-constant state of being annoyed. It could be side effects of the meds I have to take because I'm epileptic, mixed with general stress from job training, and many other factors I guess.

As I said I'm already working on managing my thoughts and feelings with therapy and so on, but I'm genuinely looking for a way to manage both my fidgeting and my constant annoyance, but without using any sedatives and what not.

How do I do more than "just existing"?

Hey y'all, new guy here. I thought I might look for some advice here as this is basically my life since last year and at least till next year (and hopefully not for longer).

TL;DR: I have way too many interests, almost no money at all atm, and a big amount of school stuff, and at the same time want to keep my hobbies going and live a happy and varied life without being too overwhelmed or losing any of the things I love because of having to change my focus in life.

Basically: I'm in scholastic training for a job as a Pharmaceutical-Technical Assistant (or whatever it might be called in your country's language, the term differs afaik).

There's no remuneration, although the state makes it available for free (I'm German btw), and I do not have much time to work in mini-jobs. Well, technically there is time available, but it's not recommended by anyone who trained or studied in pharmacy that I talked to, not even my teachers recommend it (all of them having studied or trained and with at least ten years of work experience due to the requirements for becoming a teacher afaik, some of them even being doctors iirc). The reason is the giant amount of stuff we have to learn for continually upcoming exam phases and of course the finals next year (dying inside already from thinking of them).

Next to all of that is my free time, which mainly consists of music. It's my biggest hobby in life, I play instruments (mainly bass), write music myself, and have played in numerous bands over the course of my life so far. Oh, and of course I listen to music a lot, only excluding a small amount of genres.

I also like reading (physical) books, playing board games with friends and/or family and watching documentaries and informative internet and tv stuff (e.g. Kurzgesagt, arte, etc.)

Now here's the thing: over the course of time, my motivation to go to school and learn for my future job has gone down by a lot. I've been so motivated for everything last year and now I just basically go there to not get any absences in the class register, and learning for exams has also gotten harder due to heavy(!) procrastination (still my grades haven't suffered a lot but it could definitely be better).

I also don't spend as much time on my music as I'd love to, and have had a creative block for a very long time now. I get so inspired by a lot of bands and artists I listen to but I just can't get my brain to do music like I did before all of this.

Got any ideas?

Side note: I was diagnosed with epilepsy last year, which made me have to quit my prior job training in sound engineering and made me start this present job training I mentioned. I also began visiting a therapist to talk about my problems and maybe get my head to work the way I want it to again, but maybe there's some things you guys want to suggest that could help me out c:

If you've read this far, thanks a lot already for taking the time, I hope you have a pleasant morning/day/evening c:

Tips for playing in prog?

I've recently joined a Prog band. We haven't practiced yet but they already sent out demos of existing tracks for me to check out and maybe start writing bass lines.

I love prog but I've never actually played it in a band before, and for now I have only managed to write midi stuff and transporting it to guitar pro. Tunings and stuff are no problem so far, it's rather the way of playing.

I'm used to playing classic rock and alternative and am used to just focusing on the drummer and the rhythm guitars, but feel like I need to do things differently here, like there's a few "synaptic connections" missing for me to best integrate myself into the concept of a prog band.

In case anyone's interested, according to them their style is somewhere in between things like Karnivool or The Intersphere and similar bands.

Surrealist horror (or whatever you would call that certain genre)

I'm looking for a book that's genuinely terrifying, giving you chills with every line in every chapter. I recently told a book store employee that I was looking a book that's basically something like the movie "Midsommar" but as a book, but they didn't have what I was looking for.

No general thriller with police people looking for a crazy person or something like that, or anything "80s-splatter-ish", I mean like totally surrealist happenings with characters at total unease because of some weird out-of-this-world happenings (not meaning aliens or something like that). I hope you get what I mean.

Looking for a book with music as its main theme (no theory)

Title says it all I guess. I don't mean books about music theory or instrument practice, I mean like actual stories but focusing on something music-related or at least having music as a big side topic.

Music is my biggest hobby and I'm so sad everytime I visit book stores because I never find anything like that ;_;

Bass presets? Or maybe some help with setup?

Title says it all I guess. I've posted about this topic before a while ago but the response was quite passive-aggressive imo lol.

So: I'm looking for some proper bass presets for the QC or maybe some help with getting a proper setup of pedals and amps to get a nice modern bass tone, maybe even a proper modern metal bass tone.

For now I've mainly used "Umansky 8 Presets" by SamAviations from the Cortex cloud as that fit in with most of the things I've done before, but it still gets quite hard to set it up properly whenever I change instruments or use a different amp. It's quite hard to set up the distortion to not go apeshit and also for the rest of the sound to not compete against the rest of the band (I've already put in a low cut in my global eq, just as a side note)

My setup consists of a Dingwall Combustion 4-string (which turned out to be a bad purchase as I don't like playing 4-string but back then thought I could need one still), an LTD B206 (my main bass until now) and a B205. At home I use an Ampeg BA-115 Combo Amp mainly for practice and I also use a big Glockenklang two-piece combo owned by another band member whenever we practice or perform anywhere local. I know that my sound can differ depending on which bass and which amp I use, but using any other preset than the one I mentioned before is also a pretty big factor from what I've experienced so far. I know that I could just build my own presets to get what I need, but I've rarely ever got time to do things because of being a trainee and spending lots of time with school, learning and dying inside because of exams and future finals haha🥲

Is there anything else I could do, like maybe additional gadgets you would suggest?

I've also thought about getting a Darkglass Anagram at some point in the future, as well as a bunch of other basses that would be something like an "upgrade" to my arsenal, but that's a thing for the future me, as for now I'm poor af (training doesn't get me any remuneration).

Advice needed for proper tuning

Hey y'all. I'm looking for something like an open C or drop C tuning for 5 or 6 string, any ideas?

I've recently joined a prog metal band and am currently writing bass parts to their already existing songs during my free time.

I'm trying to find a proper tuning because their guitarist tends to play in what's basically DADGAD but tuned(or pitched iirc) to C, so CGCFGC.

For now what seems to fit most on my 6-string is what I call the "Umansky tuning" (ADADGC, no idea if there's an actual term) and then also going for a low open C using pitch shifting, so GCGCFB.

It seems like that's what fits best so far, but I'm trying to find a way to better implement my lowest string more, as for now it's basically useless.
